shifting from 1 to 2 smoothly

I seldom get a nice smooth shift from first to second. I thought I would get better but I've had the car (2.2L G5) 3 weeks and I only get a nice shift when I granny it. Anyone else experience this or is this just the way these car's are? I've had a subaru, celica, skyhawk and cavy, all standard and have never had this annoyance.

i think it may be the shifter being new. a lot of them are designed to require a little more effort dealing with 1st in order to keep people from going 2-1. mide felt kinda notchy at first, but 4800 miles later, it's better.

For 1 to 2, try blipping the throttle some (500 to 1000 extra RPM than you normally have) before engaging the clutch. See if that helps smooth the shift out.

I heard a rumor that 1st should really only be used if a person wants to get going. After that, you can be in 2nd from 5mph and up. I wouldnt shift from 2nd to 1st.

Thanks for the advice....it will probby get smoother as it gets broken in as joeworkstoohard suggested. I've been reading about the problems ppl have been having with this car and I'm getting a little paranoid about future problems that I may encounter.

Same here, but I just suck at driving I think...
That could be my problem too, lol.

do you make sure the clutch is in all the way when you shift. Some people have to mash it to the floor to get a good shift.

Yeah I always have it to the floor. I think my problem is in feathering the gas and letting go of the clutch....it seems that I have to match the RPM's perfectly or I jerk the car which makes me feel like an amateur and it just doesn't feel good. This is only a problem on the 1-2 shift. Some M/T car's are a shitload of fun to shift....my car?...not so much.

Cool

it's just the hydraulic clutch...my buddy that is a transmission specialist at baierl Chevrolet in Wexford PA said they have a funny feel and if you don't have it ALL the way down it will cause problems. he said even a 1/4 of an in will caise it to mess up. Damn hydraulic clutches lol

Haven't you guys ever heard of heel toe shifting? I shifted to first on my test drive while coming to a light from 5-4-3-2-1 and then the sales guy told me "the only way to make this car better would be adding NOS" ejit.

Yeah the old 1-2 shift sucks in this car. HPTuners can fix that though.

mine always sucks too...1st is useless. If you're going like 8 mph, 1st is too high, and jerks the **** out of you, and if you go into 2nd, it's too low and you bog down.

how can HP tuners fix this?

Ive allways been told to push the clutch all the way when shifting or going into neutral. I do downshift in first depending on the slant or situation. Shifting 1st to 2nd does require finess at slow speed so you dont buck. Just the way it is I guess.
