Snapping noise up front ?
looking for some advice to what this may be, before I go into the dealership with it.
when pulling away ( sometimes, ive only heard it 5-6 times now) I get a really loud snapping noise, seems to be coming from the front driver side of the car.
the snapping noise only happened when I was at a dead stop and pulling away in first.
then there seems to be a clunk kind of noise, not as loud as the snapping noise, but is there none the less, seems to be from the same area, almost as if there is some play in the drivetrain somewhere.
no matter how slow I let my foot of the clutch, there is a jerk that I can feel and a "clunk" type noise.
I notice it the most when pulling away like i said, but I can tell theres something not right when going into other gears.
I got the clunking noise and felt the play first, so at first I thought it might have been a bad engine/tranny mount giving the motor some extra movement causeing the jerkyniss and noise, but over the last 2 days I got the snapping noise a few times and that got me thinking.
im going to the dealer asap, as any one ever had this happen to them ?

not at all, no track use of any sort, no real hard abuse of any kind.
I give the car some gas sometimes, dont get me wrong, but I never abused it in any way, never experiance any form of wheel hop, no burn outs, and racing.

Seems like quite a few Cobalt SS/SC owners are experiencing this. I have this issue as well and it's not constant. It comes and goes, so to speak. Some days it's fine and others I hear it. Usually occurs from a stop in either forward or reverse. It happens when you drive in a straight line and not generally by turning left or right. Sounds like a few clicks, or as if someone was smacking chewing gum or something.
From other people's experience, it's been the half-axles that are the culprit. Some people have had them replaced and others have had them "tightened" to fix the issue.
I told my dealer about it and they said they would order a pair of half-axles and replace them when I can make it there.

I still say its the front diff! Go test drive a 350Z it will make the same noise only in the rear. At least thats the noise I hear out of mine. Its a "clicking" noise to me or as above i would say a gum snapping type noise but best terms its a clicking noise and yes its usallly when taking off/reverse.
Yeah, I posted about the same problem. Just wondering, since he said LSD, do you guys have the G85 package? Cause My old cobalt never made the noise, but my new one with the LSD ( or aka G85 package) makes the noise...

I get the same sound when i put it into reverse and let the clutch out into gear. 2 popping noises from the front and then i get the same 2 pops when i go back into first and pull away. Taking it to the dealer later this week.
no LSD in mine.
it happen to me again tonight, but this time it was bad, an agressive snaping noise, followed by a very bad jerk in the car, happened when I was pulling away in first, heard the snap then the car bucked a bit then drove off fine.
im really concerned about it, and I cant get to the dealer untill Saturday..

Half shafts are axles.
ok, well, what ever this noise is, let go hard tonight, car just went on a tow truck.
I was pulling away, heard it for a quick second, drove away, very normally, went to put it in third gear, then boom, a very loud bang ( sounded like a shotgun blast ), followed by more smaller bangs, then it locked up the front wheels almost putting me in a ditch at 40 kmph.
car was smoking up front bad, I thought it was on fire, I near passed out then from panic, looked under it, tranny fluid flowing out of it from all over, that must have been the smoke, the fluid hittin the exhaust.
I now have no gears at all, car will not roll, even in neutrel, so whatever let go, let go really hard.
called GM road side, tow truck came and is currently on route to the dealer with my car.
so, it should be interesting when the phone rings in the morning from gm asking why my car is there.
If any of you hear such a noise, get it checked, if i was going any faster i could have landed in a ditch, or worse, thankfull I was not going fast when it let go.
when the front tires locked up I lost all steering and it just skidded to which ever way it wanted to.
I will update this as soon as I hear from GM.

Well, got the call from GM
Catastrophic Transmission failure.
two holes in the casing, insides are tore apart, nothing left to it.
he said he has a bag of peices and parts already, and they didnt even take it out of the car yet.
reason for it happening, is unknown right now, they are still looking into it.
on the frustrating side, He said he has to wait for confirmation from GM in order to replace and fix it under warrenty, wtf is that? the car is 2 months old.
why wouldnt it be covered.

Im not getting the snapping noise like you said but I have the weird noise (I feel it more then I hear it) thing happening when I turn sharply.
I have the bulleting for this, but I was hoping to hear from you whats going on. Hope they get it going quickly for you.

When pulling into reverse or first I get the same 2 clicks when my wheels are straight. When I got the car I thought this was normal (just learning stick and didn't think much of it.) Now after coming across this thread I'm a bit concerned...

I have the same problems. Clicking was getting worse. So I just brought my car to the dealership this morning. My clutch is going too. I only have 7000 miles on it. The tech said they won't even look at the clutch because it's not covereed under the warrenty. With only 7000 miles on it....it should be covered!!

I had my passanger half shaft replaced because of the clicking, they said the ends were bad on it. No clicking ever since, but after stage 2 its kinda starting again when I have to back up a hill. :/
mines has been making some bad clunking noises when i pull out for a couple months now....I thought maybe one of my tranny mounts or the engine mount, but they seem fine. Don't really want to take it to the dealer cause i know damn well i'll be paying full price for whatever they fix
I just had my clicking noise cured yesterday. The dealer had to replace the half-shaft axles and it fixed it!
Take it in and explain how others have had the same issues with the half axles. The dealer should replace them under warranty.
