So they did the shaft, still makes the same damn noise.. no difference.. I think this is just something we need to all get used to. I am not bringing it in again to have it ruined by many techs taking things apart etc.

its not the intermediate shaft its the steering column. Talk to the service manager he will know more than the regular service advisors, mine knew exactly what it was and described the problem without me even telling him. He told me the problem is with the design affecting some cobalts and HHRs

15914408.. my service guy thought it was the intermediate shaft i was like dude you replaced it 2 months ago he was like oh well then its your steering column. I only got it back yesterday so ima gonna give it atleast a month to see if it comes back. Hopefully this is a new part because i dont feel like going through this again when my warranty expires.

GM has had problems with the I shafts in the pass. My fiance's sunfire had the same problem and for the longest time GM refused to replace it for just the noise. They said unless it was broken they weren't going to fix it. However after calling up GM directly and bitching at them they finally agreed to replace the shaft.

beats me... but so far i have had no problems with the new one.

clunk noise= intermediate shaft

rattle sound coming from front end going over bumps or when turning= steering column

i think thats how it starts and then gets worst.. take it in, maybe you'll get lucky and have a service advisor that already knows the problem.. if not talk to the service manager, the guy i go to is great he knows all the problems out there and gives you no hassle.

I have had my intermediate shaft replaced a couple of months ago. The noise is back and getting louder. I have a feeling this problem will never go away.

Crap

This is a bunch of crap.........Why does a new car do this and why doesn't GM get there act together and find these problems and correct them? I also have a noise in my blower motor on low speed....Sounds real nice when driving on a cold day and slighly bumpy road........ motor clicking front end clunking.. Only thing it makes me think of is why didn,t I buy a Honda >? I want to buy american but if we cant get our crap together than the foriegners are gonna keep on trouncing us

My 06 cobalt is not under warranty anywmore as it now has 70,000 kms on it. Unfortunetly it now has that noise and its going to cost me 400$ to get the internediate shaft replaced. Is it safe to drive and just putup the noise....the car is under lease and I'll be giving it back next summer...maybe sooner!!

My last car, a 98 Cavalier didn't develop this noise unitl it had well over 240,000km on it. I remember reading in some forum that it had been eliminated in the 2002 and newer Cavaliers, so I assumed it would not be a problem in any newer model offered by GM.

Boy was I wrong.

With a week of buying my Cobalt, the noise surfaced. It wasn't until then that I googled "Cobalt Steering Clunk" and found that it is even more prevalent on the Cavalier's replacement.

The noise and shudder in the steering is almost unbearable over the poorly plowed, ice covered roads here in the winter time. I don't want to spend $2000+ for a steering column and intermediate steering shaft that have no guarantee to eliminate the problem.

I only have one solution.

Pay off the car as fast as possible then get rid of it, buy a Honda or Toyota, and warn absolutely everyone I can against buying any GM product.

I have never even considered buying a foreign branded car in the past. Now I will never consider buying a GM product in the future.

Oh yeah, by the way...

On vacation last month, I rented a 2006 Cobalt and sure enough, driving out of the parking lot I checked...clunk over the expansion joint.

Just like at home...

This thread helped get me started in the right direction... I have an '07 LT w/around 29,000 miles on it. Brought it to the dealer in early February with the "giggle"/loose sound in the stearing area and clunking under the engine. They said they found nothing...

I waited a few weeks and it started pissing me off because I kept hearing it since, and after driving my g/f's '06 LS, hers sounded like a new car compared to mine!

Ended up bringing it back 2 days ago. Just got the call: New steering column, new struts, and new key fobs (Mine sucked from the day I got them!).

So, I guess we'll see what happens. I actually love the car, but god damn this is annoying as hell.
