Steering Column Replacement
Steering Column Replacement
Is there a how to on this or guide? Need to do mine because I can not stand the vibrations anymore and they seem to be getting more violent. Buying the Dorman unit to replace the OEM one.
A little, mainly a lot of rattling/vibration on rocky roads, but I don't do much heavy braking. Just had my car re-aligned, everything balanced, and all of my front suspension/bushings checked out and they're good so I'm guessing it has to the steering column.
Mine only vibrate when braking after driving on a hot day or after driving it hard for a while (hasn't even done it at autocross though), when I had an alignment I was told some parts needed to be replaced so I'm assuming it's those. Since more than half the time the shaking doesn't happen when braking I'm assuming it isn't the rotors.
I've got an 09 and when the problem was first present it was on stock FE1 suspension, since I've put on Koni's, PRP Hardcore rear swaybar and YYS v.3 springs, so being lowered isn't as much of an issue as it being a bad design.

well, the video tells you which part is at fault, but not whether or not the thing is rebuildable or the problem fixable. Can you get a new plastic gear and replace that?
Which part does need to be replaced? Mine isnt simply making noise, the entire steering wheels shakes on uneven surfaces and under moder braking. Brakes and rotors are new and good, ball joints are fine, bearing check out, and tie rods are fine.
I made a video I am going to post up. I had thought it was the shaft because there are a large amount of metal sounding clunks down there. I tried to replicate the plastic noises on my steering wheel like in the video and can't. I am beginning to suspect its actually my rack that is bad.
I'm about to order the steering column and intermediate shaft to try and fix all this... drives me crazy! I've talked a lot with John Powell about the wondering issue and everything leads to something in the steering.
