Throwing a P0017 - Details on my Experiences Recently

Alright.. As some of you may know, I recently Destroyed Piston #4. Blew out the ringlands and part of the piston, not fun. Anyway. I went ahead and started replacing that bitch.

I replaced the piston and put a Ported Head on the car. When I set the timing, I fucked it up, I moved my Intake Cam to make the Chain Fit and made it open those valves slightly which in turn caused a disgusting Idle and **** WOT. I don't THINK i was throwing a P0017 code, but that was the last of my worries.

I then fixed my Timing and put the Cam back where it should be and now the car idles nicely, but I'm throwing that damn code still. The car sputters slightly at WOT on occasion, but its probably doing that due to being on a Base Tune with the TVS and Ported Head..

Yesterday I messed with my sensor and I still have the code. I'm trying to diagnose why I have it as it is really pissing me off.. Makes it a bitch to start unless I clear the code via Interceptor.

How do I put the sensor back in correctly on my exhaust cam.. I got the cars #1 to TDC and which I think if #1 is at TDC then #4 should also be at TDC if I recall correctly.

I then set that sensor key at 4 o clock, plugged it all back in.. Still have the code.

My thoughts:

Bad Sensor
Install Incorrectly
Timing is Off
Tensioner is bad
Need a Crank Relearn

Now.. The tensioner could be bad as its been installed and uninstalled a few times now.. The timing IS NOT off.. Or it shouldn't be as the car pulls very hard and it idles and drives smoothly.. If the timing was off, I doubt this would be the case.. If not, correct me!

I have yet to have a Crank Relearn so I'm hoping it is that.. any info or suggestions or questions.. Ask Away

Thanks in Advance.

Edit: I had been thinking.. When I installed the cam sensor.. I took the wheel and turned it to 4 o clock looking at the sensor.. I did not put it at 4 o clock looking at the back of the engine and 12 being the top 4 would be on the right side and when I installed it by looking at the 4 o clock on the sensor I actually put it at 7... I think lmfao!

Just fixed the same issue on a friend's car.

First, you need to confirm that #4 is at TDC on the compression stroke. Loosen the plug and listen for the air. Then just drop something long down the hole and "feel" TDC. Close enough.

The sensor ass'y has two marks. One groove in the hex shaft and one on the housing flange. Align. Insert. Done.

This is per the GM tech data. Good luck!

10 and 2 on the Cam Gears = TDC.. Well, Intake side and Exhaust side, I know how to get TDC as #1 and #4 are TDC each time.... I'll take off the sensor again. I believe I installed it wrong.. When putting the hex key at 4 o clock on the car.. Do put it at 4 looking at the sensor.. Or do I make sure its 4 on the engine itself.. So.....

Question is.. 4 o clock looking at the engine or 4 o clock looking at the engine which would then in turn make it 7 o clock looking at the engine.. LMAO..

Got the sensor set, put everything back together.. I had to replace spark plugs a couple days ago with autolites and stock heat range as nobody had NGK's

I started the car up and pulled it in the garage to work on it.

Put everything back together.. The car just turns over and turns over and turns over.. I am not throwing any code nor the P0017 anymore...

What... The... ****..

maybe the ecotec 300hp build document would help.... i know they tore apart the entire motor. it might have something in therre about how to set that sensor and cam properly.

also you can only do it so manytimes right b4 you realize something else is causing the problem. if you straighten things out again and you still have the same issues i would find out about a new sensor maybe? im no expert when it comes to head stuff so. im pretty much here for moral support

Damn man, that's sucks.

Did you disconnect any sensors or anything?

Kind of makes me feel lucky that my rebuild went smooth...

Figured it out.. It was 180 degrees out

No more p0017 code so far at least.. Took it for a spin.. Pulls even harder than before even though I am still on a base tune.. Runing a lot richer so that sensor was causing some sputtering as well which is so far.. Gone..

On the build book, its directly opposite of what they show, but they don't really SHOW how they put it in, they just implied it goes 4 o clock looking at the back of the motor well.. Thanks GM for that really really descriptive write up.. Needless to say they did help as there are only so many ways it can go in at 4 o' clock

What was off by 180 degrees? The cam sprocket on the camshaft or the cam position sensor?
