Ticking Sound when making sharp right turns

Anyone else have this happen on their car and/or have it fixed? It only happens when making sharp right hand turns, it's not very loud unless we're in a parking garage, but you can definitely hear it. I don't believe it's the CV joint because it sounds more like striking a piece of tin then it does the axle slipping. The car has 9200 miles on it.

Sounds like it's coming from the front driver side of the car.

Any help would be appreciated. We're taking it in tomorrow but I know the tech is going to say "can't find anything" So I wanna be ready. hehe.

2.2L LS Automatic, It started a few weeks ago but my wife just told me about it today. heh.

I would describe the sound as more of a grinding or vibration. Can you recreate the sound every time ? If so, I would take a tech for a ride and do it. Thats what I did, and he said that if he drove it, it wouldnt have happened cause he'd be driving it like a grandma. This way you know he heard it, and its also ALOT easier for the tech.

What they told me is that a new front rack assembly is on the way specifically for cobalt. The front rack used now is from a malibu and on some cars causes the noise. So if you can get them to document your trouble, you will probbaly get a letter or something about the replacement.

If it cliks or ticks while makeing a hard turn then its an axle's CV joint crapping out. Always has been the first sign of failure.

Grab a new axle and your good to go!

What your describing sounds exactly like a CV joint, but having messed with many a front ends, I can tell you that it could be a mess of things. But I'd put money that it's a CV joint. Only other real option would be a wheel bearing - or god forbid a lose wheel (did you check the lug nuts?).

There's only so much stuff up there that can make a noise relative to the rotation of the wheel.

I had this problem on my car when I first got it.
Except it was coming from the passanger side and happened when I made left turns.
Took it to the dealer and they told me there was a bolt in the strut that had to be tightend.

Anyways, I got it back and it hasnt made the noise since. That was back in February.

Dont know if its the same thing or not, but it was completely covered under warranty.

Good luck.

Thanks. Yeah it could be something witht he CV joint, except I've heard those go before and they have a bigger/heavier sound than this. This almost sounds like a couple of small rocks stuck in the tire. (except that it only happens when making the turn.)

We're taking it in here in just a few minutes so we'll see what they say.

It's always a possibility, but it was too windy today for any of us to hear the nosie so the Tech took it back and spent 2 hours underneath retorqing everything and tightening stuff up. Since our new dealership is just 5 minutes away we'll just bring it in when we can hear it happening if this doesn't solve the problem.

I've test driven a lot of cars with CV joint issues though, and we had a Kia that had CV joints crap out about 2 1/2 years into ownership and none of them sound like this. But who knows, every car seems to make it's own noises when something goes. hehe.

Though I was concerned a bit. 4 out of the 6 cars that came in for service while I was there were cobalts. One was a corvette and the other was an Impala.

I didn't have a chance to talk to any of the owners because they were all drop-offs. Which tells me they weren't just there to have their oil changed and to have something looked at like we were.

I was thinking CV joint. The wheel bearing makes more of a rumbling sound.

A wheel bearing will not always sound like a grumbling noise. In fact, they won't always make noise when turing a certain direction either. I had a car in a while back and when you drove it every once in a while it sounded like a UFO was taking off and flying by from front end. Didn't matter how fast you were going or which way you were turning or if you were going dead straight. Turned out to be a bad bearing.

Sound gone.

Whatever the tech did to the front end when he "tightened it up" worked. The ticking noise has been gone since we took it in about a week or so ago, so I have to assume something had come loose and just needed a bolt tightened up.

Sorry it took so long to post but I wanted to give it a good week or so to make sure the sound was really gone.

HHHHUUUURRRRRRRAAAAAAYYYYYY!!!!!!! Congrats man... How come he couldn't tell you what he tightened up??? Even if I didn't know what the hell it was I still would have liked to know...

"It was the recipricating ankle joint on the headlight adjustment wedge. We went on ahead and replaced the tire fuid as well because it was leaking." "Oh, okay... thanx mister mechanic man!!!"

Well he had the car for 3 hours and two and a half of those hours were spent tightening up every bolt he could find. He also fixed one of the hubcaps that was a tiny bit loose. So we're not really sure what worked.

That's... interesting... It's funny how the service department can be so dedicated to repairing your vehicle as to to go that far. And then they bitch about the small stuff.

Yeah no kidding, we still haven't gotten the door cup rings yet, we've been to 2 dealerships and both have them "on order" yet every time I call, they're not in yet. hehe. I know there can't be that big of a run on door cup rings.
