What engine / tranny? The only thing I can think of is if you have an open diff and did a lot of one-wheel-peels. That wreaks havoc on the differential. But I really have no idea if that's even what the dealer is talking about.

2nd gear popping out is 1-2 syncro, 1-2 shift fork, and 2nd gear replacement territory. Spun differential is probably a severally destroyed diff.

My friends differential went, and we're just going to put a junk yard transmission in it.

Same here, the only way to really know that is to have opened up the transmission. I don't see the average 2.4 severely abusing the differential...

Mine sounds wonderful. Still have all my gears for right now though. When the car was newer they replaced second gear and the 1-2 shift fork and syncro. That was all under warranty though. Now I'm pretty sure my differential is on it's last legs. Like slowswap said I have a new transmission to swap in. I don't exactly take it easy on my car though. Won't know everything for sure that's wrong with it until we take it apart and investigate.

I spoke with three different ASE Master techs, the only thing they could figure is a spun bearing. None have ever heard of that term before in a FWD trans. I would ask for more information if they don't cover it under warranty. Find out what the hell they are talking about
