Why does my cobalt jerk???

I got about 3500 miles on my Balt and i'm STILL! getting use to this clutch... Everytime I'm either pulling out or shifting through the lower gears it will buck or jerk. It's like everytime i let off the gas and go to get back on it. It bucks like a bucking bronco wtf? Is it just my shatty throttle control or is it the car... or a little bit of both???
I'm installing trans mounts tom. do youz think this will help?
Thanks for any info youz can give me

shift at 3000rpm...anything lower will make the car jerk since the clutch doesnt like it

Stiffer Trans mounts will make it jerkier...shift at a higher rpm.

ya...i used to have the same problem... car would kick like a mule- especially in 1st to 2nd gear....shift at 4-5 rpm and u wont have that problem

... i think it has something to do w/ our cars being fwd (correct me if im wrong, fellas lol)

....as for downshifting, try to rev match

this is not correct. the reason why the car is so jerky is because the engine moves so much. the mounts hold the engine in place, and the car will feel MUCH smoother after they're on.

you're not being stupid. there's never anything wrong with trying to learn something new. the basic jist of rev matching is simple. when you're driving, your tranny and engine are spinning at the same speed. when you push in the clutch, you are disengaging the tranny, and it starts to slow down, while the engine is staying at pretty much the same speed. when you shift, and let out the clutch, you want them both to be the same.

you know how when you upshift, you have to wait a second? if you're driving normal, slam it from 2nd to 3rd real fast and then just dump the clutch, it's going to jerk real bad. the ideal way is to shift, wait a second for the rpm's to drop, and THEN let the clutch out. rev matching is the same idea, but the opposite.

when you shift from 3rd to 2nd, your rpms' are going to go up, right? so what you want to do is while the clutch is in, get the rpms to where they need to be so when you let out the clutch it's smooth, and not as hard on your car.

example. you're going 40mph in third gear, and you're at 3,000 rpms. you want to downshift to 2nd gear. after your shift, when 2nd is totally engaged, you will be at 4,000 rpms now instead of 3,000. so, you push the clutch, move the shifter, and before you let out the clutch you give the throttle a little gas to get the rpms up to 4,000. this way, when you let out the clutch, everything is matched up where it should be.

Not true at all. I shift around 2250-2500 and it's smooth as butter and the clutch has absolutely no problems with it.

It jerks because you're not in synch when it comes to throttle vs clutch. When your shifts get smoother, the jerkiness will go away. You're probably dumping the clutch too quickly and/or giving it too much gas before the clutch is fully engaged. When letting the clutch in/out it shouldn't be one quick move, it should be smooth in and out, same with getting on/off the throttle. Anytime you do either too quickly the car will buck or jerk a little.

idk a problem i had when first starting out was getting used to the electronic TB. its harder to find the friction point. maybe ur letting the clutch out too early/giving it gas too soon?

I put in some solid mounts and the jerking subsided some... occasionally I'll get it still if I shift too low, or if I don't give it enough gas after I shift.

Just the nature of the beast I'm afraid.

Welcome to driving a cheap performance car... hard to live with on a daily basis... but very very fun if you can get past the quirkiness.

Here's what I have found out/learned while driving my 2.4 L . If you don't want it to jerk, but don't need to shift fast (say going from a stop from 1st to 2nd), get on the gas maybe 1/4 throttle, then go up to 1/2 throttle & let the revs hover between 4 & 5 grand with your foot still on the gas accelerating & then push in the clutch & shift like normal.

The reason is because you are not trying to get off the gas & get on the clutch quickly.

What i do when i shift is leave the clutch in a bit and then give gas and then let the clutch completely out.

I got finished putting the poly front trans mount in... I didn't have time to do the rear yet... I'll do it tomorrow.. I went to drive it and HOLY CRAP... It vibrates like freaking crazy. I ordered a solid motor mount before i installed the trans mount and wish i hadn't. With the vibes I'm getting from a SINGLE mount is crazy I wonder what its gonna be like when i get the 2nd mount on. And then even with the Motor mount.... DAMN... its gonna be a moving vibrater I got the trans mounts from Cobalt Addiction. They're the ones with the thick sides... I figured if you get the more expensive ones with no sides they won't vibrate as much so i guess I'll take it off and shave them..
Has anyone shaved the thick sides of the trans mounts to reduce the stiffness and does it really work?
