Unhappy Windshield: Replace or Repair

So, I've had my car for less than a month, it has 2200 miles on it and the bloody windshield is already chipped The chip is about quarter sized, and you can see (from certain angles) a scratch or potential hairline crack for about 12 inches through the impact area.

So the question of the day is, as the cost is the same either way (free), do I go with a replacement or attempt a repair?

Additionally, any of you in the Saratoga area happen to know a good shop that does quality glass work preferably with OEM glass?

Here is the ding Sorry for the crappy quality, getting the camera to focus on the damn scratch was a pain in the ass and this was the best I could get.

you cant repair a chip and crack. you can seal the chip so the crack wont spread but sometimes it doesnt work. i would replace it.

I just had one replaced. I had to go with Ppg glass. They said though they are OEM for GM and other US manufacturers. Progressive, like Allstate which ive had before, used SafeLite. Now I would recommend them. But like anything its gonna depend on who you get. Some guys are really professional, take their time, make sure everything is perfect. Others guys, well you know.

You can go with a dealer glass, but it would have been too much hassle for me and for progressive. Because they are barely evolved apes putting it nicely. You just have to put out the difference. However any glass they have in their warehouse is free.

My recommendation is get your claim done, also ask how much money wise is covered on the glass. Then call around shops that they recommend and ask about what glass they use for the cobalts. You can also ask about a dealer glass too.

However like i mentioned im fairly certain, according to safelite anyway, that ppg does gm glass, so I wouldnt be worried about quality. You will be missing the GM logo on the glass though.

take it somewhere that repairs the chips. the crack will probably spread, but, if it does, they eat a lot of the cost of a new windshield.

or, use your insurance. they can't raise your premiums because or something a fragile as glass.

idk how it works where you're from, but in PA if the chip/scratch is big and/or in the drivers line of sight, you shouldn't pass inspection. and i spend alot of time at an auto glass shop, my mom runs one in philly, your best bet will be to replace it. you could get it filled and it might help with spreading, but that already has some spider webbing to it. also come winter with snow and ice, melting and refreezing in the chip/crack can cause the windshield to crack. i had a tiny chip filled in my old equinox, and it had no spider webbing at the time about 3/16 of an inch. come winter, it cracked straight across the whole windshield.

If the cost is FREE might as well get it replaced...repairing a chip that big wouldn't really be feasible. Plus you're in upstate ny, cold winter weather may expand the cracks.

dude, f*** safelite, i hate those pocket robbing assclowns.

But we replace windshields here and there at our shop, and I will tell you the mythical truth about auto glass...

For most cars we only pay 40-50 bucks for an entire windshield. Yeh, thats right. And you know what the list price is? 400-2,000 dollars for some. Safelite pays less than half that but charges double than most places.

But bad news about Cobalt glass, COST for us is about $92 for ppg brand, other OEM style brands run for 300 and up. Expect to pay at least 2x the cost for glass, and 100-200 for labor.

I say have it replaced. Its a brand new car, its worth every dime. Getting it 'repaired' is only for beater cars imo.

Thank ya all for your input, I've contacted a glass shop, and they are attempting to pick up some GM glass from the dealership as we speak. (In other words, replacement it is)

Due to the age of the car, they're expecting the insurance to cover the GM glass which is good news as I like the glass that is made for the car.
