Thumbs down Touch Up Paint Destruction

I've dealt with this for a while, but everytime I look at the hood of my car I can't help but cringe. When I got my car, I immediately saw this, but was so happy I had found a SS/SC I just didn't care. It looks as though the previous owner had attempted to touch up some rock chips on the hood, but did a rather terrible job at it. It looks like they used way too much paint and just blobbed it on there to cover up the exposed metal to protect against rust. There is a rather large one that looks like it might even be a small dent that they just tried to fill in with paint. The color even looks off, but I checked the paint code from the bottle (they left it in the glove box so i'm assuming it's the same bottle) and it matches the color of my car.

Is there anyway I can do damage control on this? I thought about washing it up really well, trying to gently wet sand it down until it was smooth with the rest of the paint and see if that helps, then wax it up and deal with it, but it just looks so bad it saddens me every time I look at it.

Here are some photos of the damage. Sorry my car is rather dirty at the moment.

Only real way to fix that is to repaint the hood. I know thats not what you wanna hear, but even sanding it, its still gonna be the wrong color.

Shoulda just left the chips, the hood won't rust, the panels are galvanized.

My hood looks AWFUL. There's no touch up paint, but theres rock chips and little gashes on it everywhere. It seems to scratch the easiest out of every panel on the car, too.

Just get it repainted. It shouldn't cost much at all and will come out looking great.. and not to mention get rid of every other chip thats on there too.

depending if your hood was painted or not before,

i used 2000 grit sandpaper on those blobs, then followed it up with 3m scratch remover to remove the haze.

Keep in mind, the stock clearcoat is VERY thin so you could **** up your car if it isnt stock.

That's what I figured too. If I could find the previous owner of the car, I'd shake him up really well.

I was afraid that this was the answer. I agree with leaving the chips, and had it have been me that attempted this God awful touch up job, I would've chopped my hands off and let the chips stay.

Since I'm the second owner of this car, I'm not sure if it has been painted before or not. I would guess that because of the low mileage when I got it that it's the original paint job. The last thing I want is to mess it up more than this dolt already has. I guess I'll be calling some body shops to see what they can do for me.

Thanks for the opinions guys.

The previous owner did this to my baby. I would never even consider getting close to my car with a jar of touch up paint. I have shakey hands and would probably get more paint on myself than the car. I guess this guy did too.

Thanks for the info. I'll probably try to give a couple of local body shops a call tomorrow or Friday and see what they say.

A good body shop might be able to salvage it. It really depends on how wrong the colour is. It might still be able to be sanded flat, the buffed to see how bad the mismatch is.

Even if it is a mismatch, it'll still look better than blobs of touchup on the hood. Chances are, if sanded, compounded, and polished correctly, the difference in colour may be negligible. I'd definitely go that route before resorting to repainting the entire hood.

no GOOD paint shop will ever even try to 'paint match'. It is a much better idea all around to paint the whole hood.

Slow down, I wasn't saying that the standard practise was to use touch up paint. I didn't even say that the body shop should try and paint anything. I was saying that an experienced detailer might be able to clean it up, so he doesn't have to drive around with oddly coloured paint blobs all over his hood. Would the colour match the original, probably not, but you wouldn't have raised blobs of paint all over the car, reflecting light at different angles and standing out like a sore thumb.

I agree with the fact that a repaint would be the most solid solution, but then again, that's assuming he has the money to have that done. All I was suggesting was a stop-gap solution to make it look slightly better while he decides whether or not he wants to do a complete repaint.

yeah $150 seems about right for a hood. Even cheaper it you prep it yourself and repair those rock chips and primer those spots yourself. Just make sure the hood is wetsanded before you take it in. Then you can even get it done for a $100 with about 30 minutes of your time into it.

I use this **** all the time!

1.) Shake well apply very thin amount to cover the chip.
2.) let it dry for about 5 mins
*IMPORTANT*
3.) Use a base clear coat over top. This will keep from fading like yours
4.) Throw 2-3 coats of wax over top the area to start off cover layer.

I have done this on all 3 cars i have owned...Never once had an issue besides forgetting where the spot is
