my ss story
I did. The very first car I bought for myself was a slightly used 1985 Shelby Charger. It had 12K on it, that was late in 85. Then they released the GLHS two years later, and I always wanted one. That waited til about 1999, when I picked up #837, which I drove daily for three years. Then, due to her early years in the upper Midwest, with a rubberized undercoating, her structural issues became more apparent. She sat for a while, becuase I really knew what was coming, and didnt want to face it.
The parking brake cable was rotten, and when I went to replace it, a big chunk of floor board came with it. After digging in more, I found that there was rot all the way from the lower firewall back to the gas tank. I couldnt in good faith sell her to anyone. There was serious risk of the whole unibody just caving in. I dont believe in rebodying, so she went to the graveyard earlier this year. I kept her dash plaque, and all her paperwork.
For that time, they were amazing cars, and gave me the love for small overpowered cars that I still have. Loved my Stage 3 SRT-4, still remember picking it up, and the fact that driving her to deliver her to the young guy who bought her, I still laughed like a madman when that boost gauge hit 20psi just like the first time after break in, when I saw 13psi.
We live in a golden age, gents, when you can buy great cars from small road rippers like yours, up to big block monsters like mine, all with safety and reliability the 60s or the 80s never dreamed of.
