2.4l timing chain skipped 6 links

My 06 cobalt 2.4l vvt has had its timing fail, it still ran when I figured it out but it would die after a few seconds, had no cam correlation codes or lean codes, I have the valve cover off and the timing Mark's for the camshafts are both 6 links off, is this too far to change just the timing components or should I change the engine? I cant really afford to put a timing chain on to find out it's not going to work, anything will help i have pics and videos if you would like to see
