The Miata is not a "fast" car in the traditional sense. Even last years Mazda Speed edition was fairly slow, so if speed is your thing don't get it. That being said, the Miata is one of best drivers cars out there. It handles like a go cart, and always gets attention.

This is really a question of your needs, and expectations. If you would prefer Auto X to Drag than the Miata is your car. If it's the other way around you would be better of with something else.

The MS 6 is not that fast, the numbers I've seen make it much much slower. This car is not meant to compete with the STI and EVO, but instead with the Legacy, G35 and cars of that like. All Mazda Speed products are fairly conservative, and for the most part not worth the extra cash.

It weights 3589 pounds!
--Mazda Website

Mazda's new performance sedan puts out 274 bhp at 5500 rpm and 280 lb.-ft. of torque at a low 3000. Mazda claims that the Mazdaspeed6 runs from zero to 60 mph in 5.5 seconds.

That would be achieved with a perfect launch, and you would catch them by 60 or so, as the turbo is designed for low end HP and Torque. I also don't think you will be running into any of these guys looking to street race. The car is not going to be popular with the STI/EVO crowd, as it’s not even close to being in the same league. If you want performance, this is not really your kind of car.

The reviews I've read have been pretty luke warm, generally agreeing that the car was nice, but diffidently lack luster for an all wheel drive car. I just traded in my RX-8 for an STI, and didn’t think twice about looking at this car, its just not made for performance.

Its a brick. and the weight doesnt sit well at all on this car. Its a swing and a miss from Mazda I hear. I need to drive one. Down in Austin a I was lucky to get some really wild rides in a friends EVO... I cant imagine a 2?? (Lets see the dyno, and the slips mazda, Im calling bs) out running an evo, or a STI for that matter. I agree above, its a G35 thing...

My thoughts:

3500lbs + Turbo + 4cyl - Mazda's weak transmission = Look Out...

Yes, the 'speed6 is a tuna boat, but Evo/STi weighs in the 3200lbs range. I don't think there's a massive difference. However, mazda said themselves it wasn't designed to compete with subaru/mitsu's rides.
