2.4SS vs. late 90's V6 Camaro

There I was on the way minding my own business getting on the highway to go home. When I noticed a camaro following me onto the highway, I didn't think anything of it. Then I get into the far left lane and he pulls up next to me, and thats when I notice its a V6 cuz he started revving up to me. So I put the car into I gear and we go at it from 60mph and I start inching him, and by the time we get to 90mph his front end is at my rear quarter panel.

must have been a 3.8 car, the 93-mid 95 have the 3.4, those are good for a solid 16 down hill with a back wind

the 1/4 mile time is before my custom motor and tranny mounts. Before my friends redline would eat me in 5th gear from a 60 roll, and now I stayed neck and neck with him.

the 2.4 auto usually gets 15.8 with intake and exhaust and the 5-spd I believe gets 15.00-15.1.

It all also depends on if the V6 had the Y87 package or not too.

Y87 includes the same suspension as the V8's, LSD, dual outlet muffler, V8 steering rack, 3.42 gears w/M5 and 3.23 w/A4.

My 2001 Z24 will run neck and neck with a SS 2.4 M5.

klugsrt-4 who is on here had a 2001 Firebird 3800 with Y87. We raced a few times from a dig and roll and it was a dead heat. During our last roll race it was dead even and I might have pulled a little if my limiter wasn't set at 108mph.

is there any way to tell visibly if the camaro has that package?

Y87 Visible features:
- 1996-1997 had 4 wheel disc brakes
- Dual outlet muffler with no special tips just bare pipes

There was also a sport apperance package on the 1998-2002 Firebird that added a dual outlet muffler and used smaller cast ovals similar to the Trans Am. These cars are not all Y87 but the only way to tell is to look at the RPO codes since all 1998 and newer F-Bodies had 4 wheel disc brakes.

A properly driven Y87 will run very low 15's.

The funniest thing of all is that in 1998 a Camaro V6 with the Y87 package was a better match up for the 1998 Mustang GT than the 1998 Z28.

I believe it did have disc brakes, and I don't really remember seeing the exhaust so I wouldn't be able to tell you if it had or didn't have.

Well I thought I'd give you a little info on this topic since I owned a 1996 Y87 Camaro (in sig) and currently own a 2.4L SS.

The Y87 had everything Cody SS mentioned except the auto had the 3.42 and the manual (mine) had the 3.23 gears. The Y87 Camaro (older body style like mine) also had the Z28 blacked-out headlights, mirrors, and roof. The only downside was I was so sick of people thinking they were racing a Z28 I put 3800V6 badges on the side.

My Camaro once did 15.19 stock and the best stock Cobalt time so far was 15.22....but I think that will improve since I am back to stock right now.

Here's what the car looked like....I miss her. (yes, those are firebird rims)

And CodySS is right, I took out this 5.0L Mustang here.
