The reason I had 350 hp out of my build is easy - first, this build was about 10 years ago. Cam technology was good, but not as good as today. While you can get a great 400 hp now, then it meant some seriously low vacuum numbers and poor low end torque. The Camaro it went into had an automatic trans and power brakes. I didn't want to go with a vacuum can for the brakes, nor a higher stall converter for the trans.

Second, I used ported/polished/gasket matched 882 heads. They flowed well, but not as good as the Vortecs or any of the aftermarket heads out in my price range at the time.

And finally, this was off of a 2 bolt block with stock internals. And I don't care what anybody says, I do not think that 2 bolts, and even stock internal 4 bolts, are going to last long if you're making 400hp @6000rpm. If I had the money at the time, I would have pulled the rotating assembly and put in the stroker crank, and went ARP on the bolts all the way around. But money limitations have a way of smacking the dreams down.

350-400 hp in a 4k+ lbs. car is still slow. If it's a stock trans it will dog off the line hardcore just like that also.

I hear you. For an extreme budget build a decade ago that is pretty good.
