Who said 235/40's won't corner well? You're either buying the wrong brand, or are talking out of your ass. I get much better traction than stock with these tires in EVERY situation, including cornering. You just need a good brand with stiff sidewalls

what he means that 235s on a 7" rim wont corner as whell as if they were on a 8" rim...
if you force a tire that is too large on too small of a rim the side walls will fold inword .on hard cornering it could cause the the tire to fold over alittle , but the avrage joe may not even notice it .

as a rule of thumb its just not a good idea to go wider than 225 on the stock rim. if you want more traction at the track get some slicks or drs. or buy a wider rim so you can run a wider tire safely

ALL tires have flex, thats just a fact of life you can't get around. And if your tread area is wider then the rim they will flex more. You may not feel it or realize it but trust me they do. Take it from someone who's been doing this stuff for over 20 years now.

and actually, a certain level of flex in the side wall will increase your handling. just as you don't want your suspension TO stiff(aka you want to be able to APEX still).

The tire flex, and body flex are two very important things to work with cooperatively.

And yes, wide tires can add traction, but wide tires can hamper you overall more than most would think.

Personally, my perfect tire size is a 215/40or35/17's or 18's. on the cobalt i'll probably get 225's though because of the 18's.

So many factors to consider with tires, rims, suspension, and body.

Here is a video of me at a small track near me. I'm on the Stock TC wheels with 235/40/18 Nitto NT05s. You can see, even these tires (designed with stiff sidewalls) flex a bit under cornering. I really like these tires on the track.
