The rear calipers should be self-adjusting but they don't always do so. You can't just keep cranking the e-brake handle nut and expect to fix the problem. Most people max out that nut and still have e-brake slack because the calipers aren't adjusting properly. Make sure the caliper piston is self-adjusting against the inboard pad. If not, take the caliper off, wind the piston back in and put it back together. If the piston clicks out and maintains pressure against the inboard pad then your e-brake shouldn't need adjustment. Also make your the spring-loaded armature is preloaded against the caliper piston too (has a full swing available). You don't want it maxed out, otherwise your handle nut adjustment will be useless.

Disregard everything except for what ^ that guy said.

Remove your rear calipers and twist/push the pistons back into the caliper fully. Reinstall, pump up the pedal and check the e-brake again. It'll work 100% better. I've done it myself and I'm about to have to do it again. Seems to be a once-a-year thing.

My solution? Go hit a speed bump doing 60... knock that **** loose! haha I dont recommend this, but after I mistakenly did this in the dark, my ebrake went from fully up/not holding, to holding the car in 2-3 clicks.

Another option, is if you are on a hill, and need a quick hold and not being able to trust the brake, just put the car in reverse after you shut it off. that gear will hold better than 1-5. Just dont do it every time.

hes using a lot of tools to pull the console apart.. i had mine apart in 4 seconds on the side of the road when i broke my shifter linkage. like everything else with these cars... grab and pull, if it doesnt come off, pull harder

parking brake cables can stretch, so they will need adjustment on a new car. mine were adjusted at 25000kms.

Sorry to resurrect an old post. I just wanted to get an opinion on this. I just popped the driver's side brake cable back into the split retainer. This seemed to help with the e-brake cable tension. I have a feeling it will pop out again over time because the driver's side cable is a good 1 inch longer than the passenger's. Should I be worried about this? Is it an indication of caliper problems? I did have that driver's side caliper replaced, along with fresh pads about 2.5 years ago. I wonder if they jacked something up.
hang help would be appreciated.
Thanks!
Here is a pic for reference. Showing cable set back into retainer.
