They said my vin # is not in the recall so there was nothing they could do for me and no matter what I said they just said no recall on your vin # means nothing they can do for me unless I pay out of my own pocket. sigh...

Mine has a rebuilt title and I still got them to do the work even though all warranty should be void by that.

A recall has nothing to do with warranty.

Well they first said that they wouldn't do the recall because the rebuilt title voids that and I got it in thanks to knowing someone.

What happens is the little flap holding the tumbler springs is not secure and opens. When that happens the key stays put. Not sure if you can do something proactive to prevent the problem.

It's called a redesigned cylinder which GM has to fix this problem.

Unfortunately my dealer isn't as kind as any of your guys so I'm guessing I'm gonna have to end up paying for it. So is there anything bad about putting it in first gear and popping the clutch to let it die?

It's not fantastic for the clutch but that's what I did before I had my ignition cylinder replaced. Only did it once before I took it to the dealership. You should try another dealership, they'll take care of it. Did you converse with Jackie from GM Customer Service? She's really helpful.

Worse come to worse you can replace the cylinder yourself for $40 and a little work.

I took it to two dealers and they both said the same thing. No recall for my vin # means they won't get paid so they're not even going to touch it. Also, yes I got in touch with Jackie and she has been helpful so far but we're still trying to figure something out. I went to auto zone and O'Reily to look for the ignition cylinder but they only have the one that comes in a whole bunch of little pieces that you would have to assemble yourself. There wasn't any that came already assembled and ready to go. I'm still debating if I can just replace it myself. The guy at the dealership said that even if I replace it myself it still won't work because I would still have to tow it to them to have the key reprogrammed because it won't start. Has anyone ever replaced it themselves or know how to do it? Our keys are "chipped" right? So it won't start even with a new ignition cylinder because we would have to reprogram it? Or is the dealership just full of $hit and want to screw me over?

Thanks YelloEye,

His Cobalt is not a part of the recall but I am working to see if there is anything that I can do to help him.

Ae_xiong,

I just sent you a private message requesting your email. I want to send you something that may be helpful but I can't attach it via private message. Can you send me your email when you have some time. Thanks!

If it's just the cylinder that needs replaced there are exactly 0 electrical parts involved, no reprogram necessary. If the module needs replaced I don't know.

Ok, thanks a lot for all the help so far everyone. So has anyone tried to replace the ignition cylinder on their own before? Any complications and/or tips? Thanks!

You know you could of just put the car in 5th, hold the # brake all the way and brake to the floor and dump the clutch right? That would have turned off the car.

What's the difference between putting it in 5th or 1st? Also, has anyone tried changing the ignition cylinder by themselves? Any tips?
