CRACKED blocks happen to the 2010 as well. The problem was not addressed until the LHU was built. It it just more common for the 08 build dates to CRACK due to an imperfection in the forming process around the coolant jackets. I guarantee you some of the 2010 will crack also.

If you go through the dealer they will quote you $4000 for a new short block (not sure which one), $2500 for a used one (likely another LNF), add 16 hours of labor = $2400.

If you get your own you can buy an new LDK short block for $1500 ($1750 shipped) or long block sans turbo for $2500 ($2830 shipped) both from ZZP. I saw a crate from CED for like $4200. Haven't seen anything else, and haven't looked for used. Also haven't checked for labor costs since I'd be putting that in myself.

So around 5 to 6k...sucks but really not that bad.....if you want to keep the car and you really love it.
Example... a S65 BMW M3 engine will run you 25k to 30k installed....

Yeah, cost of a new motor is actually quite reasonable. Sucks if you need a new motor at all though. At least a bad motor doesn't completely doom the car, like it would with most Euro imports.

Not porous block related, but I wanted to comment that from my research the USB in 2009s is a hit & miss kind of deal. I have seen a couple 2009s with USB, but I have seen even more without the USB.

damn! Same build date as me. Hate reading about porous block issues. crazy that its happened at higher mileage like the ops. Anyone have a percentage of lnfs that had the porous block? googling stories about this makes me second guess this damn car everyday. But i still love her!!!

The only hard data would be something that GM compiled about how many warrantied replacements they had. That data is sure to exist but it's locked deep in the vaults. Now that the warranties are expired that data is not going to be updated. Just anecdotal stuff on forums. People have tried on here to log it, but what percentage of actual cases does that represent?

True. I know it's been said many many times but it's crazy how gm will just wipe their hands of the situation. I know cars have their problems but this is on another level. To me it ruined the brand name because I'm going to expect them to act the same way with any other car of theirs imo. Heard there was a service bulletin somewhere If that even matters.

This is how almost every car company handles issues. Very very rare do these ever blame their own manufacturer for the issue.

If you search the internet you will find people of all makes and models that have these sort of issues.

It just really really hurts when you or a family member gets burned.

I heard that too but it was just hearsay. I agree, they've lost me as a continuing customer. Sure, they may have fixed this issue, but how they did it is pretty cowardly in my mind. Especially when they told me that my block failed due to some supposed negligence on my part (read my blog for more details on that). I expect issues to come up (I'm an engineer, I know it happens), but I also expect some accountability. I don't expect them to kick me out the door and flip me off on the way like they did.

I didn't really do homework on my behalf when I bought this car but even knowing bout the possible porous problem I probably would have got the car. This has kinda been my dream car since I bought my first car 6 years ago, which was only a base ls. Anyways I absolutely love this car but it is difficult to fully enjoy with this situation in the back of my head. I as well as most other lnf owners probably think the same way. Sucks thinking about the possibilities of throwing down 5000usd on a car I paid a little less then 10k for. I probably worry little more seeing as I just hit 45k miles on my 09 and I've seen majority of the stories involve engines with under 50k. Does "getting on" the car increase the chances of this happening or does it just happen?

That's hard to say. Without knowing exactly where the crack is on mine, and how the stress in the block changes with harder use, my guess is that "getting on" does matter but not that much. Since it's between the coolant and the oil, it's probably something that only gets stressed with temperature changes, so my guess is that more temp cycles and higher engine temps might be what really affect it. So if getting on it involves heating the engine hotter then it could exacerbate the issue. Fatigue cracking can happen at any time. I didn't "get on it" much, kept it stock, etc, and it happened to me at 5.5 years and 71800 miles. Would it have happened sooner if I tracked it regularly and tuned it? Maybe, but I can't say for sure.

It's hard to not constantly worry about it, but you've got to just enjoy it while you have it. If you just baby it for fear of the block cracking, then what's the point of having it in the first place? May as well just sell it in that case. And we really don't know what percentage of cars the issue affects.

Coming on 60k hopefully it won't show its ugly face at 70 or 90 since it has happened later too. I didn't know about this til after I bought the car, but at any rate I still enjoy driving it every day. I'll deal with it if it should happen. I strongly believe that gm should take care of the cars with block problems no questions asked. You'd think they would want to make good to keep possible future customers.
