Quirks/Ups and Downs of TC's
Quirks/Ups and Downs of TC's
So here is my story. I have a 1999 Camaro Z28 convertible. I love the car and its power. It truly is awesome. But the thing is its 99 so it has problems. It has lil problems here and there every damn week. Nothing big but annoying as ****. What are the pros and cons of the cobalt SS? I know it has the no lift shift and the launch control thing. My dad is a mechanic and I have to sell him the car so he'll cosign. Not even sure if I want to get rid of my camaro I love so much.
Well my camaro is a coupe. Only con I see so far is FWD. What is the factory warranty? How easily can I get it as fast as my camaro? I have headers and intake lid. Stock tire sizes?
3yr/36000 powertrain. and idk about the rest.
The tune will not really void the warrenty. Thats a hard question to answer. It depends on the Dealer to be honest. but i doubt anything breaks under the tune. its really conservative. The clutch is the only thing holding the car back from bigger numbers.
If you want you can wait on the stage kit....that will still keep the warrenty and it will be offical.

well there is one guy that had an oil leak. i think that is the worst one.
Frequent problems: not to many. An issue with the OEM charge piping. it coming apart. easy fix though
yea and the tune is only 250.

Cons: Good luck trying to get replacement parts, rear brakes have issues, GM stage kit may not happen.
A blower kit on your camaro (even just a cam and heads) would blow any of the SS/TC's away in straight line performance whether it has a tune or not ...these cars are very good in the corners though....it keeps right up with my 2004 BMW M3 on a road course....maybe even a little quicker
If you want something as a nice and peppy daily driver, this is a good choice. If you are looking for a street beast, there are far better choices to be had then the Cobalt SS.
Good Luck
I believe you are mistaken, sir.

3 years / 36,000 miles for bumper to bumper.
5 years / 100,000 miles for powertrain (which also includes use of the No-Lift Shift feature AND launch control)
5 years / 100,000 miles roadside assistance.
6 years / 100,000 miles rust.

Oh, and the trunk is really big, which everyone I show says is weird. And it's not just big for a coupe; it's a big trunk hands down. You can almost argue it's a practical car.
Mazda HATCHBACK: 16.5cu ft
Cobalt Sedan: 13.9cu ft
Subaru WRX: 11.3cu ft
Ralliart: 9.1cu ft
Most people will easily dismiss FWD as the powertrain of Satan, without actually understanding why. Most FWD production cars one comes across don't have more than about 250hp. In high-speed cornering situations, the inside wheel tends to spin, and the characteristic of boring understeer rears its ugly head. You're asking the front tires to steer the car AND propel the vehicle. After about 250hp, especially without a limited slip differential, you're basically spinning your wheels and any extra power is rendered useless.
In this comparison however, the FWD Cobalt keeps up with the AWD Subaru on the track, WITHOUT the limited slip differential, and surpasses the track performance of the AWD Mitsubishi.
The Cobalt is also the least expensive, even when fully equipped.
The car does surprisingly well compared to what most people would consider better cars, upon first impressions (Mitsubishi Ralliart, Mazdaspeed 3, and the Subaru WRX)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nordsch...imes#Lap_times
8:22.8 on a wet track
The car is also reasonably safe, equipped with Stability Control, Traction Control, COMPETITION mode, OnStar, and bodes well in most crash situations:

Other than changing the factory summer tires to all seasons, I'm pretty happy with this car bone stock. I don't think I'm the only one.

pros: you can get a 2900LB sedan with 315HP and 335 LB FT at the wheels after a simple tune, try finding a car to beat that for anywhere near $23000. Some (myself included) don't like how GM does the interior, just make sure you sit in one, I personally don't like that the rear headrests don't flip forward to improve visibility, and that they can't hide the airbags on any chevy. That being said, if I had the 23000 laying around, I'd buy one in a heartbeat. Cons, besides personal taste, none that I can see, even in regular cobalts, these are badass cars stock and only get better.
LOL, I don't think you guys saw the issues I had with mine. I have had 3 ECM's put in. 4 New Evap canisters, 2 reflashes.......but thats just my car, lol its good to go now, but I will never be able to have cruise control again
The sunroofs on the coupes (at least on my 09) rattles pretty loudly when going over small bumps which is pretty annoying. Other than that, I sit around all day dreaming of driving it home and it's the highlight of my morning.
If you're looking for something unassuming that can kick some ass when you want it to, you're looking in the right place.

You will find something you hate about it eventually. Don't go into it thinking your getting rid of the problems from your camaro. The "new-ness" will wear off. I like my SS/SC about 80% of the time. But she has her problems and you'll only find them with time.
Cons:
>FWD, you will make plenty of power but getting it down the track is a different story.
>GM, they can make motors, that's for sure, but you will certainly find the good ole quality GM is notorious for when you drive a cobalt.
Pros:
>Power: 260hp stock, and they respond ver well to mods. (up over 300 with minimal done)
>Improved parts after the kinks were worked out of the SS/SC design.

Ill share my 6300 miles of experience on an 09 Cobalt SS
Pros
-Available in a sedan
-Great gas mileage
-excellent low end for a 2.0 4, you wont need to downshift in traffic
-excellent suspension characteristics in ideal climates
-traps 105 stock
-for 350 bucks you can pick up another 50hp and 80lbft
-Great connectivity (usb/ipod/mp3/blueooth)
Cons
-Dated exterior design
-Horrible headlight illumination
-Flimsy interior
-Steering wheel doesnt telescope
-you have to buy your own armrest
-lots of rattles
-Small fuel tank
-slight lag in throttle response
-front brakes squeal below 40 degrees
-suspension makes awful noises below 30 degrees and will be quite harsh on bad roads
-rear brakes have uneven wear and chew through rotors and inboard pads
-Sold only with summer tires, if you live up north you will need another wheelset or all seasons
-aftermarket tune will void powertrain warranty unless its GM's exact calibration (which may or may not get released)
did i miss anything?

You will miss the RWD even though the Cobalt out turns the Camaro.
The sound and power delivery also feels different.
I would never have sold the Camaro for my Cobalt but it sure does make a fun DD!!
My god you nailed it. my highlights are what drive me insane and thought it was just me!!

yea for me the headlights are what drive me insane. they are just really really inadequate for rural driving... If there isnt any street lighting you find yourself reaching for the highbeams, which IMO are just as bad if not worse than the low beams. you cant really rip around at night cause youll outdrive the lights quickly.
I tried the aftermarket HID, too much glare, and highbeams were still a joke. Smartdude24 is almost done with my FX/E55 projector retrofit, hopefully that does the trick.

The stock headlights suck even with HIDs they are still not that great. I need to get some projectors soon.
