ECM swapping?

Does anyone know if an ECM can be swapped from one car to another without screwing anything up?

I'm not looking to do anything to void warranty, but trying to help get another car running...

I know the BCM communicates with the ECM;
I know the BCM controlls weather or not the car will fire;
I know hte BCM stores mileage;
I know the BCM has the (factory) radio ID saved (so swapping one for another factory radio doesn't work without the BCM being reflashed)

I am unclear on if the ECM has vin info stored, and weather or not the BCM needs to see something specific to the car, and weatehr or not swapping an ECM from one car to another will mess anything up and set of a peranent limp mode or something...

I tried emailing a dismantler, but it looks as though they are not going to reply to my email...

Also related;

1) Should I be able to swap in an ecm from any other LNF powered car, and everythign work?

2) Is there a wider interchange that would (for example) allow me to nab one from a 2007 2.4L cobalt, and just need to reflash with an LNF's "tune"??

I know with the older GM's there was a degree of interchangeability, and just proper chip needed to be installed in the car... but this new stuff has me at a loss.

I sincerely appreciate any clarification I can get in this matter.

30 min security seed relearn needed upon ECU swap from another E69 LNF ECU. Procedure has been posted by me before or it's on ZZP's website. BCM knows even if the VIN's match. I changed one VIN in an ECU & sold it and the buyer had to do the SES relearn before it'd run.

No other ECU is gonna work AFAIK. E69's are LNF specific.

The 2.0 LNF is the only direct-injected motor Cobalt motor, so the ECM for the '08-'10 Cobalt SS does not work in any other Cobalt, and vice-versa.

actually iirc the LAP 2.2L is also a direct injected/updated version of the older 2.2L

Thanks for the ECM info clarification!

So if I find one on carpartdotcom, all that matters is that it's from another LNF - platform doens't matter?

If it's an LNF ECM, you should be fine. Good luck finding one, though.

^ yes... GM has Bosch on lockdown now will all of their ECMs... warranty work only, vendors can't get them anymore

its to prevent ECMs from hitting the market, being flashed, and swapped... this is their way of fighting that, just cut everyone off... why are they so adamant about doing so? because contrary to popular belief here, if flashed correctly to match the VIN and with the updates for that VIN, they have no way of being able to trace a swapped ECM...
