FTW-k04R vs ZFR In need of turbo swap!!

I've come to a conclusion that my turbo seals are shot and I am currently in the market for an upgraded bolt on replacement. I've stumbled upon two options. The popular ZFR which is obviously the most pricey one however power does come with it. And the k04R, which is basically a k04+ made by a company in Florida called Turbobay performance. Quick comparison. Both has similar spool times and both hold power to redline. I'll be able to push 350whp with the k04R and roughly 400whp with my current setup and the ZFR. However the ZFR costs roughly 1500$ more upfront and from what I heard isn't that reliable. Long story short, what's your guys opinions? Which would you purchase? I like to roll race, would drag it if I could get to the track, and also want to get into autoX. It is also my only daily driver. Thanks guys!

For the cost the K04FTW is a great cheap upgrade and don't have to worry about breaking the trans. I run mine with no boost ramp. I'm interested in the 7163 for sure

The K04FTW is basically a cheap upgraded stock turbo can't compete with the ZFR unless you consider price. Full spool by 2800rpm nice top end but will never flow the same as the ZFR

I know it doesn't flow the same however apparently the k04r holds boost all the way to redline unlike the stock turbo which a great plus on top of added power. Do you have the k04R? And would you say the zfr is worth the extra price...?

Ya I have it. I was the one that told you about it. It's a big improvement over stock and for the money I'd recommend it as an early mod to everyone. But the ZFR is an after market big turbo that can push around 450hp.

I was running more psi than matt had mine at 28psi until my Hahn intercooler split again everywhere. If you can wait a week I can send you a vid of a pull.

With the ZFR you have to worry about the trans the K04FTW is so smooth I think it will be alright I've beat a lot of fast cars so far with it too

The K04FTW is a big wheel turbo built by Turbo Bay Performance based in Florida. Don't quote me 100% but it has a 65mm billet wheel and is only $495.

Basically a tiny bigger than the K04+ but less than half the price

Thanks for the explanation. You have a build thread on it or something? I would rather go with that than the zfr. Do they need my turbo as a core?

Not really I'm gonna do one for Matt cause he's such a good guy and has the best customer service (I still txt him 2 months after getting the turbo) I'm gonna do a full review with a dyno and everything but my Hahn intercooler decided to let go everywhere so first I need a new one which I should get hopefully early next week. I can answer all your questions or you can email Matt at turbobayperformance@live.com

Yes there is a $150 core charge

No its not. I guess we have to email Matt. But the sound of having a turbo more powerful than the stock k04 but less of a torque spike than a zfr has me very interested.

im assuming that with upgrading to the KO4r you would have to retune just like any other turbo upgrade

neat. Looks like the K04-GT28 hybrid but lower cost. So the wheel is bigger but the compressor housing is the same size? how about the exhaust side? They use a bigger turbine??
