How my motor blew.. twice

about a year ago i went to byt to get a tune.. i told him to go ***** to the wall, my motor blew during the tuning session. He claimed my motor was messed up before i got there and that the tune was fine and it was not the reason the motor blew.

Fast foward 6 months i got a short block from morad, and had a mechanic who builds 1000hp supras replace the short block, i got it back at the begining of january.

I tried to contact BYT to detune my car via PM and in threads, he would not answer emails and when he responded to one of my pms he said make an appointment which i was PMing hima bout in the first place.

Move 3 months later to march and guess what!!!???? another piston is messed up. No changes, still the same tune "that didnt blow the motor"

This is the internet and this thread is about to become a **** show i realize, and i will not comment after this because i have told my side of the story.

Remember there is probably a reason why he doesn't own a shop, and works out of his backyard. Not that other people haven't had succesful tunes from him but in my case, it was the worst decision i have ever made concerning my cobalt.

No ifs ands or buts, a tune from Nick BYT blew not one but two LNF motors, one with 44,000 miles, another with 6,000. Mod carefully!!!

he does own a shop it should be open in a few months and you never run a aggressive tune that one done for one motor on another the 2nd one was your fault for not getting the tuned changed before beating the **** out of it
i have a pretty aggressive tune done by nick making over 400hp on a stock motor lsj turbo swap for months now and haven't had any problems

well i'm not defending any one but if you said go ***** to wall then i think your motor would have popped eventually, i have a byt tune but it isn't that dialed in really since it was done at his last dyno day back in march.....but his shop will be opening soon i mean it does take a lot of capital to get something like that off the ground

what mods did you have done, ex: boost level, bolt ons, and power you made

I have a BYT tune, no problems at all. I blame you for messing up the car. I bet hundreds of guys will back Nick up by saying he is a good tuner.

You are so full of it it isn't even funny....

But Ill entertain the thread with the actual story here. And the other people that have tuned your car and seen what I saw, please speak up as well this go round.

To start, when you came and popped your hood it was soaked in oil, EVERYTHING was soaked in oil. In fact, I sopped up a puddle of it on your valve cover even. You claimed "It's from the BOV, don't worry about it". HUH?!? That makes no sense. You then go on to laugh about how you beat the living **** out of your car and your Dad or Uncle (I honestly forget which it was now) builds race engines so you planned on driving the pants off of it and then having one of them build you a motor.

You also asked for an extremely aggressive tune on your car and wanted really high boost, 30psi, which I said then I wouldn't do but I would go as high as 25. I obliged going by your plans on building the motor in the future.

After our initial discussion I installed the parts you wanted installed and then checked over the car quickly after noting all of the oil. We also found your Breather line Check Valve was in BACKWARDS.. I did a Comp Test on your motor even because I was worried and said 1 cylinder is down about 5psi compared to the rest. May or may not be anything to worry about but just something I noted. I stated at this point I was hesitant to tune your car, I don't want to be held responsible when this thing blows. You stated right then and there "I wouldn't blame you, I beat my car and drive it hard! *laughing goes here*"

We load up my base tune that I always start with and I told him to drive easy and normal so we can get some cruise data and then we will try a SHORT pull to see where the boost was at (I did raise the DAL column a bit to make 25psi, only difference from what I normally start with). Within 2 minutes of driving the car I ask him to do a short burst in 3rd to see where the boost comes to, it comes up to just about 26 so I tell him OK let off, we'll drop it down a lil bit. (again, he wanted 25psi and an aggressive tune!) Right after saying that, he drops to 2nd and does a pull thru 2nd NLS'd to 3rd and keeps pulling. I said ok, or we'll just do a pull now.. lol..

We then pull over so I can make some adjustments and I told him something smells and my eyes are stinging, wtf.. (it's night time btw) There's a LOT of smoke.. The car was still running OK but def sounded a lil off now. I told him let's just go back to my house and check it out please. We're a block away from my place.. He pulls off the side street and rips it yet again, I even said, what are you doing??!?! "I wanted to see if it will clear out" (note the quotes). Then he starts panic;ing and immediately blaming me, the tune blew my engine etc.. I told him that is just NOT possible. While the boost was a lil higher then he wanted, the car was still set rich and with barely over stock timing as well! I've ran out to 30psi for 10,000 miles on my car without an issue, I even tracked it regularly like that.

We get back to my place and check the Comp yet again, the cylinder that was low is now quite low and blowing oil. I told him to take it easy and limp it home. He was even laughing with me saying, "well, looks like I will build it right away now lol"

He had my tune on the car for maybe 10 minutes and maybe 5 miles of driving.. I then talked to other people that had tuned his car for him previously (His car had been tuned for quite awhile, long before coming to me, this was NOT a stock car) and they told me they had a similar experience with him. They also backed up what he had said about him beating the living **** out of his car.

As for the PM's and not answering them, that is a FLAT OUT LIE now.. You contacted me when the motor was back together and I told you to let me know what dates are good and we can check the tune out. He didn't contact me back. The BWW meet was coming up and he was on the list to come. He then contacted me again and I told him I will be at that meet and I will gladly check it out for him there. He didn't come to the meet or contact me again after that.

We never got to fully dial in your tune on your car since we barely drove it that day. The fact that you went out and continued to have your fun in it is not my problem. You know the tune needed to be adjusted and you should know after changing all kinds of parts that it really should be checked out before going hog wild in the car. Im sorry you are having bad luck but there's no need to insult myself because of your lack of thought or care for your own car. Yes, I work out of my house. I am however an official business and we are moving to an actual shop in the next couple months. Not sure what that proves.. There's plenty of great tuners out there that work from their home and don't even own a business.

Since this incident happened last year and you tried to hang it on me last time, I have since started making people fill out a basic form. It states your mods and car's condition. It has a spot where I can note things like "Qt of oil in the valve cover recess had to be soaked up and Breather check valve backwards AND beats car to death" and then we both sign off on it. So I thank you for being my learning experience at least..

Nick 100% knows his stuff. OP, if anything went wrong with your car, it was 100% your fault. Don't put blame on the tuner because you don't listen to instructions or care to get your tune dialed in.

No one is going to win against BYT in the court of public opinion. There is just no true dinks on there stellar reputation. In real courts, lets just say byt is adequately covered, trust me

but you know what the really funny part is. I bet you he will still try to help you out with your situation if you don't like act silly.

this thread should be locked, and or supporters should not post in this thread as to let it die. This is will be my only one.

Even after he pulled this crap last time I told him I would readjust the car for him when it was back together. You can't please everyone and this guy is certainly THAT guy. I knew from that night he would be an issue down the road....

I have only met with Nick twice so far but I have been impressed with what he has done for my car both on the dyno and on the streets. One thing I do have to say though, he has some big ***** getting in the car with people he doesn't know and has them do a 100+mph pull without wearing a seat belt. **** what this dude says, i'll stand by my tuner all day!!! no homo

I have been seeing more and more of this on the forums also. My tire went flat, My battery died, My thermostat went out must be the tune. Lol mechanical problems still happen stock tune or otherwise. I have only seen one tune BYT did out here ran real well he even had to back timing down because of our crappy 91 oct. that doesn't sound like someone who runs tunes unsafe or will nilly to me.

No offense but it sounds like your fault to me...

I dont understand why people think they can go with these extremely aggressive tunes on a motor with stock f'in internals and not blow stuff up.....

And no offense to him, but that makes HIM stupid as well.

Im a firefighter/paramedic and Ive seen what car wrecks will do to a person at speeds much lower than 100.... at least at 100+mph he'll never no what happened and he'll most likely earn himself a nice closed casket once they shovel his remains up off the road.

been seeing a lot of false supporting vendor accusations lately, people always have to point the finger, when they should be manning up to their own ****.

Now you see why people don't sell a " ***** to the walls" canned tune.
You took an agressive tune dialed in for a different motor(cause that's what it is after you rebuild it) and ran it hard without going back to have the tune checked.
You are an idiot and should be embarrassed. You whine about not getting called back yet you ran it with the old tune for 6,000 miles. I'm sure you could have found someone to tune you in that time if you had made any effort at all.

Hey I said nothing bad about you, i was just recalling the events of the day. I fully understood that **** happens and motors blow.

thats why i replaced it and am going back to you, hopefully we go a little bit more conservative this time:lol But yes, i went to BYT, I left with a blown cylinder number 1. It was a stock short block not a forged motor,
26 psi will do that sometimes
