Opinions on Boost/Numbers....

So here is the story. I bought the car last april, and immediately I got a K&N intake and trifecta tune. I was told that it was a 23.5psi tune, the original "canned" file, and we did data logging and that was sent in so that I could get the revised tune ASAP. I ended up having to wait a total of 5months before I saw a revised tune mailed back from Vince. During this time, I added a ZZP catless 3" DP, but held off on other mods until I saw the new tune. That was uploaded and then we data logged again to fix the issue of running a bit rich, and I got a revised tune from that back within 2months.

Over the winter, I have upgraded to the ZZP intercooler/charge pipes, full 3" exhaust and a few other goodies, and decided to do some data logging and send a file in to Vince so that I could prepare for the summer. Remember, that the tune I am running right now only was revised for intake/dp.... Got an email back from Vince 2 days after we sent in the data logging, saying that he couldnt revise it anymore as the tune/turbo was maxed out and there was nowhere left for me to go in terms of power.

Along with this, and the new mods, I notice that at WOT, I am only boosting to 120kpa, where I usually boosted to 145-150kpa before installing the winter round of mods. I think its in the neighborhood of ~21psi.

My question is this... after installing mods like the IC/pipes and exhaust, would that drop the amount the turbo would boost? With only the intake/dp... why would Vince max out the tune, so that after any other mods, there's no more power to be found? And with the newer mods on there, is there not tables to be revised so the car would run a bit smoother?

I dont want to spark a Trifecta vs. HpT battle, as my buddy (the trifecta dude) is learning HpT right now, and we are doing it in a couple months when he feels more proficient at it. I just want to know what your guys' opinions are on the numbers I am reaching, or what could be going on with regards to the tune....

Thanks for the input peeps.

I have basically the same mods, minus the IC, and hold 23psi no problem.

I'm no expert here but I'll just point out the obvious, if you're tuned for 23.5 and you're getting 21, did you check for boost leaks? I had a boost leak in my exhaust which was causing a 1-2psi leak.

I boost leak tested after the IC/pipes went in.. but there have been a coule -30C cold snaps here, so that may as well be a problem, although I am kind of leaning away from it. I am just thinking that since I dont have a tune set up properly for these mods, its trying to make boost based on previous numbers (now with more air in the tubes) that its making the same power on a bit less boost.... if that makes sense. I could totally be wrong though.

But it is good to know that with the same basic mods, I should/could be making 23psi... and the turbo shouldnt be maxed out as is.

boost leak in your exhaust? you mean the exhaust side of the turbo? the only place where you should be concerned with boost pressure is before the intake.. not after the exhaust manifold..

@cobalt daddy, yes. manifold, to me it's part of the exhaust system. But I apologize for any confusion.

Well, turns out for the 2nd time in 5 months... its the manifold MAP sensor. Either I have a bit of oil in the tube that is dirtying it... or its just blowing cause of the boost. Once I replace this, I should be boosting back at 23-24psi, and the stutter should be gone. This was an easy fix.

Now.. does anyone know if I go with a couple of 3bar map sensors, does Trifecta tunes come with that ability already added into the tune? Or do I need the PCM page update like it states on ZZP site?

That's gms1, which is more or less a 20 psi tune

Psi changes with the weather, not sure if aftermarket tunes are similar..

Lol thanks Dave. And I already found the problem as to why im boosting less. replacing the map sensor in the morning, as I had this problem a few months ago, and just didnt think it could happen again.
