Just out of curiosity, if you have you rev limiter set to say 6500 rpm and you over rev to 8000 or beyond will you have these issues? I thought that is what the rev limiter was supposed to prevent?

Please educate me.

Thanks.

Manual overrev by going back into the last gear. No rev limiter can stop the mechanical force of it. Imagine what rpm you would be at in first gear at 65mph if you were to go from 2nd to 1st gear

The pre-deterrmind rev limiter will work say if you're accelerating in a particular gear and you run that out to the set limiter - The computer then cuts ignition and/or fuel to keep the motor for revving any higher.

What happens in an over-rev situation like this is if you are moving too fast for a particular gear. OP was in 3rd accellerating and accidently shifted into 2nd instead of 4th - at that speed it is far greater than that gear was designed for and much higher than the rev limiter. Once accidentally shifted into 2nd and the cluch was let out, the road speed FORCED the motor to spin beyond designed.

Massive failure to valvetrain results.

Thanks for the education and good luck Dart putting your car back together. I'm eager to see the results from the BNR after you get it running again.

If it threw the rockers but the springs stayed together, it's probable that there is no damage to the tops of the pistons right? What about the rings if those are the exhaust valves not opening, wouldn't the cylinder pressure blow out the rings?

From the looks of it, he just blew a rocker on each cylinder. Since there are 2 exhaust valves per cylinder it should be fine as it was still venting, just extremely inefficiently. If I were him, I'd def inspect the rockers and lash adjusters though. When I overrevved mine, one of the lash adjusters seized up and blew apart the rocker. I would hate for him to reinstall them and him have a seized lash adjuster or two(a $10 part) and destroy a $20 rocker as well.

That sounds right, I mean where else is the exhaust going to go? I at least had one more exhaust valve still working, so exhaust still routed out of the cylinder, just not as efficiently. Did you check the top of the pistons and in the chamber?
