Considering yours did score the cam lobes, I would HIGHLY suguest getting new cams. Trying to sand them will not work well and if you leave the scratches it will end up chewing the hell out the roller on your rocker.

From the pics your cam lobes seem to be pretty beaten up, I can swear I can see what looks to be flat spots or wear marks.

This was almost definitely caused by Valve Float IMHO.

I've had this theory for a while.....since the only thing holding the rocker in place is the tension applied to it via the valve spring, when your valves float the rocker looses contact with the cam and then evenutally causes the cam to come back and "smack" into the rocker, shearing off the tip of the lash adjuster. Once that happens you get a nice mess under your valve cover like in those photos.

That much boost, on that size turbo and 7000rpm I would be fairly certain this was cause by a pretty serious case of valve float.

Upgraded valve springs should definitely be on your list of when you rebuild that motor so this won't happen again.

I'm not sure why I'm even helping you out since some of your "tough guy" comments in the ZZP LSJ thread....but I've never been one to hold much of a grudge and always try to help a fellow enthusiast.
you ARE holding a grudge since you are mentioning it now over a month later... and i think you got everyone a little fired up in that thread with your comments. but anyways im pretty low on funds for this so im prob going the cheap route. ill be getting 8 new lash adjusters, 8 new rocker arms, and 1 valve so far. a friend of a friend is going to look at the cam tmrw and decide whether its reusable or repairable. already looking at prob 400 in parts and i havent even looked at the piston...

Nope, I'm good. Its the internet after all, I always seem to get into arguments for some reason...lol. Just figured I'd mention it since it was kinda funny.

Either way, hopefully you get it fixed up. Good luck!

I got 3 rockers, and 16 lash adjusters. Even if the other 13s were probably fine, just did not wanted to take any risk.

um i think a forged rod can hold up to an interfering valve. piston may be toast though. the valves probably just mangled.

K i do highly doubt you have damage to your piston as well.. If you do you will see it.

No risk with useing the rods btw... Check the bearings

Hey OP, did you decide on which springs your gonna use? As I stated earlier I bought the supertech 78lb kit and installed them over the weekend. I checked them out and rotated the crank and they seemed to be moving well with no contact on the sidewalls of the head but someone told me on another forum that I should have machined the head to make more room on the sides of the springs. I never heard of ppl doing that for the supertechs, but just thougt Id mentionit since your about to do the same

Well they are basically the same head makeup up top except for the cams and HPFP area on the intake cam side. I figure if for some reason they do contact its got to be miniscule as I couldnt see it with my eyes and a large flourescent lamp illuminating the area, and would probably shave off in the first minute of having the engine running.

Anyways, sorry to post my own question in your thread OP
But thanks for answering my question chevycobaltss3

No man, not at all! lol Its exactly what I wanted to know, as I hadnt heard of anyone having to make room for the springs before. Its not like they are 98 pounders lol

Thanks again and good luck with getting the OP back up and running
