I'm probably way over analyzing this, but I thought it was an interesting thought.

So what better for the cobalt? filling the tank close to empty or filling it up when theres gas in it?
Look at it this way..you DON'T wanna run out..for obvious reasons and because it can damage the high pressure fuel pump. Doesn't matter WHEN you fill it up as long as the car is running. I take it down to the RED DOT or damn close..that gives you about 3 gallons to spare. I add fuel conditioners, so I like to top it off with about 10 gallons per fill up for the proper concentrations. BTW... when tank is almost empty, if you look at your *INFO* center, you see a *LOW FUEL* message in the part of the menu that normally tells you how many miles you have left on the fuel tank.

I always run my car out of gas to the point that the fuel pump starts chugging, thats why i keep a spare gas can in the back which i use to fill up when i run out on the side of the road.

Fill up around a 1/4 tank because the in tank low pressure fuel pump is cooled by the fuel it is bathed in, at about 1/4 tank it isn't really covered by fuel anymore, which will shorten the life span of the pump, and like all GM in tank pumps it isn't cheap.

Interesting. When I fill it up close to the *RED DOT*, it takes 10 gallons..that leaves 3 gallons in the tank, or about 1/4 tank. Never hear about this *bathing deal* though. I always thought you just need the gas to lubricate the tank pump. BTW, I add 4 oz Marvel Mystery Oil to every tank...it acts as a "fuel lubricant* of sorts.

I'm not an idiot, I know when to fill up, but what I was wondering was if there's a better time to put gas in your car or if it even matters.

If that makes me an idiot, well so be it, I don't really care, but I thought it would be a good conversation topic.

I mean you guys act like I did a crime against your intelligence, I'm sure there's been worse.

If not then consider me a legend in your mind.

MMO FTW! I add it with the E50 since ethanol isn't much of a lubricant for the fuel pumps or injectors. A little top oil never hurts, except our intake valves never see it.

Yeah..I also use Redline Fuel System Cleaner. They say it *hangs around* to survive combustion and gets a second shot at the intake valves when being recirculated from the crank case via PVC. What the hell..can't hurt. I add 3Oz of this along with MMO at every fill up.

it can cause premature failure of the level unit though. Its not the best question, but its acceptable.

Never put gas in your car until it completely runs outs and I will bet that you never do it again.

I have a 4 oz bottle from 2 stroke oil I refill & dump that in at the pump. Simpler since I'm already swiping twice to blend the 93 octane E10 with E85 1:1. I get the also.

Have a 16 OZ marked bottle for MMO...use a small measuring cup for Redline. Add the funnel and it's a *party*

Doesn't take long, but it's a tad messy. I have everything in a small box that I stow it inside the cargo net.

Holy ROFL batman that is great... Maybe you should replace your fuel tank sock with those undies next time... The methane in your butt juice could add to the lubricity of the fuel. Just a thought.

To give proper construction so this thread can end.

Pre-98 cars were not left with a "Safe" for fuel for the fuel pump. This is why a lot of fuel pumps use to go out during the summer because towards the end the pump couldn't take the heat from people running them so low.

But all cars now come with a 2 gallon "safe" that allows the fuel to always be there before you go empty. This is why you can drive so long below E. You still have 2 gallons in there. =)
