When do I put gas in my car?
I was driving around the just doing some thinking and I noticed my gas was low. It got me thinking is filling up when the tank is near empty hard on the fuel pump or fuel related parts of the car or is filling up when the car has a lot of gas (lets say half full mr optimistic) going to be bad due to possible debris, condensation, humidity and other particles staying in the tank due to non circulation.
I'm probably way over analyzing this, but I thought it was an interesting thought.
So what better for the cobalt? filling the tank close to empty or filling it up when theres gas in it?

Fill up around a 1/4 tank because the in tank low pressure fuel pump is cooled by the fuel it is bathed in, at about 1/4 tank it isn't really covered by fuel anymore, which will shorten the life span of the pump, and like all GM in tank pumps it isn't cheap.
Interesting. When I fill it up close to the *RED DOT*, it takes 10 gallons..that leaves 3 gallons in the tank, or about 1/4 tank. Never hear about this *bathing deal* though. I always thought you just need the gas to lubricate the tank pump. BTW, I add 4 oz Marvel Mystery Oil to every tank...it acts as a "fuel lubricant* of sorts.

I'm not an idiot, I know when to fill up, but what I was wondering was if there's a better time to put gas in your car or if it even matters.
If that makes me an idiot, well so be it, I don't really care, but I thought it would be a good conversation topic.
I mean you guys act like I did a crime against your intelligence, I'm sure there's been worse.
If not then consider me a legend in your mind.

Yeah..I also use Redline Fuel System Cleaner. They say it *hangs around* to survive combustion and gets a second shot at the intake valves when being recirculated from the crank case via PVC. What the hell..can't hurt. I add 3Oz of this along with MMO at every fill up.
A regular Witch's Brew eh?
when im low like at 8th, i just dont boost till i can fill it. but usually when ur warning light goes on, u got like 50km left in the tank, but someone whould check on that, who's in? lol
i wait till the car is boggin down from runnin on fumes before i gas her up. daily driver bab and i gotta drive far from work to home and randomly take the car out during work to go pick up other cars and people from dealerships around town
I have a 4 oz bottle from 2 stroke oil I refill & dump that in at the pump. Simpler since I'm already swiping twice to blend the 93 octane E10 with E85 1:1. I get the
also.
Doesn't take long, but it's a tad messy. I have everything in a small box that I stow it inside the cargo net.
To give proper construction so this thread can end.
Pre-98 cars were not left with a "Safe" for fuel for the fuel pump. This is why a lot of fuel pumps use to go out during the summer because towards the end the pump couldn't take the heat from people running them so low.
But all cars now come with a 2 gallon "safe" that allows the fuel to always be there before you go empty. This is why you can drive so long below E. You still have 2 gallons in there. =)
