boost bypass questions...

(info on boost bypass mod) ok well this friday (tomorrow) i'm headin up to the track once again. A ssgt at my shop has a saturn redline (same sh*t) and he told me about this mod. i know hes very bright in automotives since he's been doin this for years. I asked him if it would harm anythin and he said no. i just want a little more reinsurance just to make myself more comfortable with this mod. i'm only gonna be using it on the drag track. so any information would be greatly appreciated!!!!!

thank you,
shawn

I heard its bad. If your running 100% boost all the time, and not going WOT, what do you think is going on in your engine? How long do you think you engine will last with all that pressure just being stored? eventually its gunna go somewhere, and you might not like where it escapes...

From what I read on the subject, I saw some people with gains, other's with nothing. Overall I believe the general consensus was that it has little to no effect.

Search for "boost bypass" in the 2.0 Section and change the combo box to read "Search Titles Only" instead of "Search Entries". It seems that alot of people did it pre-stage kits to push the stock pulley past 12psi, nowadays I'm not so you'll need to do it. Search and read up though, there's tons of threads on it. I think you'll find that most people don't find any advantage to it.

It is not safe. It disables the bypass completely, not a good thing.

I did this mod when I got my car 2 years ago, then went back to stock after a few weeks, honestly didnt notice any difference in performance, IMO i wouldnt bother and just go and spend $200 for a cold air intake thats worth 7-9hp and sounds amazing, while increasing the gas mileage!

Disabling the boost bypass is bad. Like it has already been said, running boost through the SC at all times regardless of the load will cause you to run lean and blow the motor. Most of the people who did the boost bypass mod did it because they were running smaller pullies and didn't want the car to bleed boost at 12.5 psi so they could get higher. You can tune the car with HPtuners now and get around the 12.5 psi limit (or get stage 2) so there is no reason to risk blowing up the car just to try and get an extra .5 of boost (assuming you running the stock pully).

ok.. for simplicity sake

you CAN remove the pressure side port (this is where the benefit comes in under WOT)

you CANNOT remove the vacuum side port (this applies to part throttle, leave it alone)

If you follow this, it does not harm your vehicle. If you remove the vacuum side port it is VERY BAD.

well thanx for all the input...i've decided on my own to not try this. i mean it was put there to do what its suppose to do. by pullin lines off and plugging them off, i cant see that being very safe. i wouldnt really wanna risk it.

we have superchargers. meaning if you hit the gas, you have instant boost becaues the bypass valve closes anyways if you're wot. so why run all that boost when you don't need it? i haven't done it, and havne' looked into it, but the things iwould expect are bad gas mileage, running very lean, and eventually popping the motor. i dont' see why you would want to do this mod, and would advise against it.

People are confusing the purpose of this mod.

The whole reason it started is due to the factory calibration.

At the top few hundred RPM, the GM calibration 'cracks' the bypass open slighly to limit boost pressure. (its only a psi or two).

There are 2 ways to eliminate this
A. Pull off the hose to the Pressure side of the bypass actuator
B. Update your calibration via HP tuners.

Both methods are SAFE

The problem comes in when people dont understand the purpose of this mod. They take it too far and disconnect the hose from the "vaccum" side of the actuator. This keeps the bypass valve closed AT ALL TIMES. this is THE PROBLEM. The other mods listed above are safe, this mod is the dangerous one. So go ahead and take off the pressure side, nothing bad will happen. I can guarantee it. Just dont touch the vacuum side
