Boost Cooler
Boost Cooler
In the new summit catalog there is something from a company called snow performance called the boost coller. Its for turbo charged or super charged engines, and suposedly it gives you 70 to 100 extra horsepower for just $299 to $399. I was just wandering if anybody has ever heard of this? If you want to check it out it is in the new products section of the newest summit racing catalog, or they have a web site, http://www.snowperformance.net/ just wanted to see what you guys thought.
to me it sounds like an intercooler spray.. im actually pretty sure thats what it is.. but they use a chemical mix instead of just water (which most intercooler sprays use; ie:STI).. only problem ive herad about mix sprayers is that they cause early detonation and can wear out the engine after a while.. but who knows.. this system might be better.
I found another article on it (sorry its in a mustang magazine, just kidding, i'm a chevy guy) but here it is http://www.musclemustangfastfords.com/tech/0407mm_snow/
Sounds too good to be true...
I dunno guys. It seems like it sounds too good to be true. $299.00 for another 70 - 100hp? It sounds awesome. But I don't know, I'm definitely not gonna risk it, especially if their website tells me nothing about the product that's most important.
It's water/methenol injection. It lets your support more horsepower.
Lets say you pop on a smaller pulley and go up to 18PSI. But now you have some extra heat in the air charge, this means more chance of a knock happening and less dense air (thus providing diminishing returns on the PSI = more horsepower equation).
So you put in this system and it injects water/methenol mixture into the intake and when it meets with the hot air, physics takes place and the air is cooled down by the water/alcohol turning into a vapor/gas.
I don't think a system like this will give you more power but it will let you support more power with your current system without an intercooler upgrade, ect.

I actually installed the Snow Performance Stage II Boost Cooler on my SRT-4. Real world experience is that it'll give you an honest 20 to 30whp depending on your mods. In order to take full advantage of it, you need a way to lean out the fuel mix. SRT-4 guys are seeing the best results when A/F ratio is around 12:1 -- which you'd never want on a supercharged car without something to control knock (which is what the WI kit does).
I installed the kit, and made 3 more whp throughout the range on 2psi less boost than without it.
No way you're going to get 70 - 100 hp with just a water injection kit. Unless you're planning on running a Nitromethanol/water mix instead of Methanol/Water. Then you better be careful or it'll be raining engine parts...

The benefit from this set up is to cool your intake charge in hot summer months. The engine will run as in cool fall or winter days. cooler charge means denser air (more oxygen) and better performance. It will also reduce the chance of knockand loss of timing due to knock. If you could adjust your fuel mixture allows you to run leaner with more timimg, so more power and better fuel milage.
The snow system is currently endorsed with Team ZR1, a bounch of hardcore performance freaks, which I belong to they do lots of LS1, LT1, F-body and vette stuff. The snow system was finetuned with Team ZR1 with extensive tunning and performance data.
I will be running this system on my 2000 corvette, which has full botl on mods, plus a head and cam package.
Boosted engine will benefit greatly due to the higher air intake charge temperatures seen from compressing the air.
The Snow system offers good quality pumps and hardware I would recomend it highly. For some more info go to www.teamzr1.com and click on products then electronics.

The ebay kits I've seen don't have a progressive controller. It just comes on at a particular boost level.
That was one thing I liked about the Snow Performance unit over all of the others, the progressive controller. Right now I have mine set to initially come on at 5psi and then ramp up to full pressure at 25psi (won't get there until after the turbo upgrade).
There is another manufacturer I didn't find out about until after the Snow system was on it's way that has a progressive controller; Devil's Own.
Here are some Water/Methanol Injection vendors' websites:
http://www.devilsownonline.com
http://www.snowperformance.net
http://www.coolingmist.com
http://www.aquamist.co.uk
And there's probably more. If you know what you're doing, the best "kit" is one that comprises parts from several vendors. If you're new to WI, then I'd suggest just going with a complete kit from ONE manufacturer.
Devil's Own may be one of the best options for the Cobalt.

It has been tested, the use of 100 pure methanol is actual less effective than a mixture of 50/50 water and methanol. For naturally aspirated engine 25 % methanol 75% water actually is better. Windshile washer fluid blue stuff wich is rated to be good for winter use usually has from 25% to 40% methanol and it is very inexpensive. Lets not re-event the wheel here this is not new technology. This same system was used on WW2 fighter and bomber aircraft, they did not use straghmethanol, but a mixture. Methanol helps in the atomization of water , increase and lower the intake charge temperature the octane rating of the fuel, but the chemical reaction of the water breaking down also adds more oxygen to the charge. Added benefit of water is that it keeps the enside of your engine clean, free of oil or carbon build up, even keep you O2 sensors clean for better reliability.
guys one of the first thing you should do is to remove some of the coolant from the intercooler system and add some water wetter or purple ice, it WILL help you drop intercooler temps a good number of degrees.....
this is proven with the ford lightening guys and the cobras

Even if it cost more to run the Race Methanol/Distilled Water mix. Not knowing what all of the ingredients are in washer fluid is not worth it.
The Walmart dark blue , BJ's, Costco brands have higher 30%-40% methanol $1.25 -$2.00. Just need to look and you will find them. You also want methanol not isopropyl alcohol or wood alcohol. But $2.38/gal mixed for 50/50 is great.
