First Oil Change

What mileage was on your car when you got your first oil change? I figured since synthetic came in the car it had to be pre broken in, because synthetic oil is not a good break in oil. I figured 3,000 would be adequate for the first one, but whats everybody elses opinion?

You are correct in assuming the engine is already broken in. The rest of the drivetrain components aren't, so it's still advised to take it easy on the car for a while at first, though. That said, it's perfectly safe to go by the OLM from day one, but if you need to change it sooner for peace of mind, then go for it. Some people feel it's worth the price.

I did my first oil change at 500 miles, right after the "break in period".

Well see i've got 1400 miles on my car so far, I was just wondering if it would be okay to wait until 3,000. I figured that it would be assuming that the engine was already broken in. Becasue honestly if our engines wasn't broken in and GM put synthetic oil in from factory then our engines would never break in at all.

You know it. The best part is I told them it was mandatory to do the oil change after 500 miles because it's GMs recomended break in period and they believed me. They tried to charge me for it and I said no way, not for something that is mandatory from GM. So they gave it to me for free. What tools. I recomend an oil change after your first 500 miles because this way any shavings or anything from break in will be flushed out quickly.

There shouldn't be that many shavings in the first place man. Its almost impossible to have shavings in the oil with syntehtic because it makes everything too slippery. Thats the reason the engine had to be broken in at the factory with dinosaur oil. This is the reason I believe I'm going to wait until 3,000 miles. Also if there are any shavings they shoudl be minimal and picked up by the oil filter.

Oh yeah absolutely bro. There would be minimal shavings if any at all. I just did it as a precausion in case there was. I'm paranoid. It's not like it will hurt it you know.

Just follow the darn oil life meter....you'll save money....car won't be any worse for it.

Plus, its better in terms of dumping out old oil for recycling...less garbage oil.

The filter will catch "shavings", and even most particulate <sp> matter...that's what its for....

Betcha if you take your old filter, and run a killer magnet over it, it will come back with...nothing....that means the filter held the stuff it should....

I agree I'm going with the DIC also, I'm at 4600 miles and at 28%.

I did my first oil change at 50%. Now I do my oil changes when the DIC tells me, with the exception that I change the oil filter at 50%.

Filter should be in lock step with the DIC...I didn't think the owners manual said to change it more often....

yeah I'm going w/ the DIC.... hahaha. No seriously, the DIC monitors your driving style (supposedly) and determines the time between changes. And if following the DIC works w/ my warranty.... why bother.

Well, considering it takes like 6 and a half quarts and its only 2 liters worth of displacement, and not to mention it is a highly efficient modern engine and runs on synthetic, you can afford to be a little lazy on them.

Personally i have them change the oil at 50% (about every 4500 miles) on the oil life meter, but thats just because i'm paranoid and want my oil to be in top performing condition. I bet you could run it to 8000 miles easily without any viscosity related engine wear.

That maybe true, but until I see some proof that the filter can last more then 3000 miles, I will assume it has the typical life of any oil filter. That means changing by 3000 miles. In all synthetic oil tests the Mobil 1 was able to easily go 12,000 miles before any sign of breakdown. However, during the test the filter was changed every 3000 miles and 1/2 a quart of new oil added to make up for the oil loss. If you factor out the added oil, you should be able to easily pull 8000 miles between oil changes. But that still takes into account the filter being changed at 3000 miles. If not changing the filter I don't know if I would trust it to go more then 5000 without an oil change.

I am just paranoid as well, and want to make sure my engine is as protected as possible.

Changed mine at 1500 Kms! Better safe than sorry. Though even I admit, it probably would have been fine to go longer.
