Ok guys. I got into an arguement today with one of the service writers. I work at a GM Dealership. We argued over the stage kits being covered under warranty. I won't get into the details of what each of us said, but here is the OFFICIAL GM RULING on ALL of GM performance parts:

Due to the nature and intended usage, GM performance parts (except for engines and partial engines, refer to warranty statement on page 24) are sold without any express or any implied warranty of merchantability or fitness for a particular purpose. The entire risk as to the performance of such parts is with the buyer. Should such parts prove defective following their purchase, the buyer and not the manufacturer, distributor, or retailer, assumes the entire cost of all necessary servicing, repair, damage, or loss to property and consequential damage.

INSTALLATION OF GM PERFORMANCE PARTS MAY ADVERSELY AFFECT THE GM NEW VEHICLE WARRANTY.


There you have it, a dealership can officially void your warranty if you have any GM performance parts on your car, like the stage kits. I feel bad for all of the people that chose to go with these kits for the warranty. I was told that this came out of the official gm service polices and procedures.

 

But yet they put into writing that the Stage kits are fully covered under the remainder of the factory warranty - it says so in plain black and white in the GMPP catalog. I would think they would have one helluva lawsuit on their hands if they say "No, it's covered" then say "No, it's NOT covered"

I have the 2006 Performance Parts Book Catalog, just like you mentioned, and I showed them. This statement came out of the "General Motors Service Policies and Procedures, Article 1.1, page 21".

 

Ya thats just not true. I used to work for a chevrolet dealership and believe me i checked it out b4 i bought my S2. It is fully covered. I had the Service Manager place all kinds of phone calls and he even got me a fax that explained the procedures and what is and isnt covered under warrenty with the Stage kits. It also must be noted that the Policies and Procedures manual was written before the Stage kits became an item able to be bought by the consumer. I saw the same article last year....

 

But the point is, there's contraversey. While there's enough proof to argue that it's covered, the GM dealership will more than likely use the book that I quoted that from, and the sad thing is, they'll win. Our service writer called GM, our local warranty rep, pretty much everybody. This is what he came back with, and it is the book that they'll use if they have to. That clearly states that all of gm's performance parts are that way, not just the stage kits. Now with that said, our dealership agreed to warranty them, IF they are bought and installed through us.

 

By the way, I'm not one to post BS and false statements. It's in plain writing right in front of me, and it's from GM, so no, you're statement of "that's just not true" is wrong.

 

Eh....doubt it. If it was installed by a GM dealership and you have a copy of the work order and receipt then even if GM didnt cover it, which they do 100%, then it would be the responsibility of the dealership.

 

I dont think you meaningly posted wrong info. I just think you are mis-informed by other mis-informed people or out of date literature.

 

Yeah, I don't have to worry about mine either...but that's total bullshit.

The only thing they have working against them is that they ADVERTISE them to the public in the GMPP book as being fully covered under GM factory warranty (and for 12 months/12k miles if the warranty is expired) when installed by the dealer (they CAN void the warranty if you do it yourself). So the customer who is purchasing the product is given the impression IN WRITING that they're covered. Whereas the policies and procedures are not public domain. SO....they've got a tough fight on their hands.

I understand what you're saying about the Policies and Procedures book, HOWEVER unless they give the customer access to that book or otherwise present them upfront with that information, it will not hold in court. What holds up is what is presented to the customer, because that is a part of the purchase agreement. The customer is making the purchase with the assurance given in writing in the catalog that the product is covered under warranty. That's all the courts will care about since there is no fine print that says there's an exception or that purchase is suject to all Policies and Procedures listed in the P&P manual. There's no way for the customer to know that and they are under no obligation to ask since the information was given in the catalog.

 

I know what you meant. The only problem is, if someone were to dispute it, GM has that to fall back on.

 

Well this counters what you were told and as others have said GM would have a hell of a fight trying to pull that one. Can you say "Class Action"?
As well my service manager told me personally Stage 2 was covered, not that any of this does me any good anymore.

 

They even tell you in the Cobalt brochure that you can "customize your cobalt" with the stage kits. Nice job GM, way to make it difficult.

 

I agree, GM is probably going to have some issues with this in the future.

I'm not too sure there's controversy. It sounds as if GM is saying that they are warrantying the parts as far as defects are concerned, not the effects the parts may have on the actual vehicle. So say you have GM Stage 2, and you spin a bearing, they've given the dealer room to opt not to fix that. But if something related to the Stage 2 system fails, say an injector goes bad, etc. that's covered under the GMPP warranty.

 

I definately see GM having some issues with this too. I'm really not that surprised though....I've already mentioned that something like this was probably gonna happen.....I'm sure I've heard a couple srt4 guys do this... back in the day. Hopefully GM will straighten the record out on this one rather quickly.

 

Well I think alot of it has to do with the dealer as mine said the STG kit is warrantied for 12 mo 12000 miles & I keep the 5 year bumper to bumper I paid for even with the STG2 kit installed!

I trust Brian as he had my Tahoe covvered under warranty after I installed a Whipple SuperCharger on it & blew the transfer case out of it & they replaced it for my $100 deductable I had on my warranty

I bought this SS from the same dealer for this reason, Good service, Quality products & they stand behind there cars which = happy customers, so I think if your local dealer is a dick he will try to shaft you on your warranty ha ha ha so to say.

I think it just sucks to have this warranty issue to be such a grey area as GM needs to make it clearer in writing !

 

No doubt....I always try to find the best dealerships to work with....but there usually is one dick in every dealership that'll try to screw you.

You know those INSANE cobalts built with GM parts.....THOSE are the kinds of situations your "document" is referring to.

GM does not want to warrantee 800hp Monsters just cuz they are built with GM parts.....

but the simple fact is.....the stage 2 kits are sold under a completely different pretense.

the BIGGEST. and i mean 100% the BIGGEST selling feature of the stage 2 kit...is its GM warranty.

why wouldnt everyone just go intense? its cheaper.....


hell its a friggin pully, injectors and a few bits of downloaded information.

you are paying for the R&D and extensive testing that GM puts this kind of thing through to ensure that waranteing it is financially savvy for them to do.
thats why you pay a premium compared to intense.



I think the information you are reading, is #1 written before the warantee'd stage kits were released.....#2 in reference to other GM parts that a person could buy that they DONT consider an upgrade that they should waranty.

 

This is exactly why I don't count on GM to do anything but build my car. I'll try to get some service in situations like my current one, but in the end I've already made preperations to have my car serviced else where. I love GM cars, but I hate GM stealerships. Maybe the one I'm dealing with now will change my mind.

 

why is this always being brought up? You get one dealer (keyword Dealer) to say one thing and it will support someones argument. You can another dealer (keyword Dealer) which has read the material pertaining to the item in question to say another thing to support the other argument. The keyword is ... dealer ... the dealer is not the one that holds your warrenty ...
GM is the one that holds those rights.
GM is the one that released the stage kits.
GM is the one that has the final say which has already been spelled out in black and white by GM that the kits are covered under the warrenty.
GM wrote the book on the warrenties dealing with GM vehicles.
GM has never said anything otherwise to the fact that the kits are not covered under warrenty.

The dealership doesn't have to install the kit for you. They can say whatever they want but at the end of the day they do not have to install it if they don't want to.

If your car is in need of service and you are still within your original new car warrenty the dealer HAS to inspect your car even if you have the kit installed. If the dealer refuses GO TO ANOTHER DEALER AND CALL GM. Do not speak with anyone else at that dealership do not make any noise or talk to a manager JUST LEAVE CAR IN TOW IF NEED BE JUST GO.

 

hey guys, i've said this from the beginning. just like mr. colley told me today in the email... the kit if installed by a dealer is covered for 2 years under warranty. it says nothing about it not voiding your car warranty. the kit is covered, ie: injectors, pulley etc... for 2 years just like almost every other gmpp part is.

it's not surpising at all if they will start voiding warranties for drivetrain issues with the stage kits.

let me focus everyone's attention to the fact that everywhere you see the word warranty with stage upgrades it says somehting to the nature of

"the kit is covered under warranty"

which has nothing to do with the car.

You can pretend that "the man" is tryin to steal your warranty as much as you want.
Show me *1* person who has had warranty voided due to stage 2.

then we can look at how many stage 2 cobalts who have had warranty work done.


For christs sakes they are replacing clutches on stage 2 cobalts.
