Octane Boost

What is everyone's opinion towards octane boosters? Are they safe? What are the pros and con's to using them. Are they a waste of money?

I figured as much, but I just wanted to poll everone here. I figured since the gas is watered down now with Ethanol, maybe some octane booster would help bring it back to normal.

Anybody know how much a meth kit would boost octane?

Ethanol has a higher octane than the gasoline, so if anything the gas is "watering down" the ethanol.

Higher octane just keeps the engine from pinging. Only makes a difference on a radical engine with high boost or high compression, and only if the computer can adjust the timing to take advantage of it. Does nothing for a mild untuned engine, hence waste of money.

I seem to recall someone testing meth injection with the Stage 3 PCM, which has a tune for 100 octane. I dont remember his results, but I wanna say they were only slightly worse than actual race gas. I cant find the thread though so if anybody knows what I'm talking about please post up the link.

edit: nevermind I had my facts mixed up. Heres the thread: https://www.cobaltss.net/forums/2-0l-lsj-performance-tech-47/gm-stage-3-methanol-injection-installed-67970/

Best run without methanol & 100 Octane mode off: 15.30 @93mph

Just for comparison, there was a stock SS SC running high 15's at low 90's mph. He was stock with the exception of the exhaust.

My buddy ran his 240sx with a turbo clip, air to air intercooler, injectors, turbo back exhaust, hks boost cntroller LSD diff, ect clutch, oil cooler, and over sized radiator.
His best time was 14.2 @ 98mph.

Also want to say whats up to the GM eternal guys that were up threre!!

So in conclusion the meth injection doesn't work properly if you let stage 3 inject it. In other words only nitrous will work. It felt sluggish and slower when I let the PCM spray it in. So I by-passed it to my dash switch directly and I sprayed it & it worked much better. It would probably work better if I get it HP tuned. I don't plan on getting HP tuned, so im going to purchase my Nitrous kit on Monday, & remove the Methanol. So the methanol is going up for sale. Also, im going to put in my electric cut out.

The last time I ran my 14.90 was with stage 2, intake, exhaust & 2.8 pulley & the weather was in the 65-70 degree range at night. So i must admit that 100 octane & methanol did help and if the temperature was better, it would have definetly broken in a 13.

Laters!

You do know for every octane point it only bumps it up .1? So it would take an octane booster with 10 points to make it one octane level higher. You would be better off just buying the higher octane at the pump.

93 octane from Shell is all I ever purchase. I was just curious about Octane boosters. Didn't know much about them. Don't think I will ever buy any.

good quality octane boosters will help if you are getting knock.

NOS Racing Formula
Lucas
Torco Accelerant

the quality ones will explain to you right on the bottle that they ARENT the 0.1 point snakeoil that people believe they are these days.

those i just listed above will raise your octane up to 60 points....or 6 full octane points.

I have seen the proof of them working in front of my own eyes on my interceptor gauge.

but if your car is running fine right now, with no knock....adding an octane boost basically wont help you.
