I dont believe the rod was what failed. It breaking was the result of something else that failed I think. Whether it was as simple as excessive amounts of cylinder pressure/raw fuel from the car pegging 10.0 in 3rd like he said, or lifter that stuck and made the piston make contact with the valves and then shocked the rod. Although, you would think the car would have killed itself during the pull if the first one was the case, and the top end components should have had no damage, but you would also think that if it was the 2nd scenario I listed that you would have just messed up some valves and maybe ruined a piston and left the rod alone since it wasnt under heavy load when it happened. Idk, just thinking out loud.

Sucks too cause the time was taken to make sure everything was done right and not a single corner was cut, and it still had failure. Similar thing happened with my friends old 2.3 stroker in his evo. The last time we put it together we had the engine builder at Top Speed on the phone and at one point he said use a dab of red loctite on the balance shaft delete bolt, which I remember doing as we were talking to him. A few days later at a stop light the car threw a rod out the side of the block like Steves. The cause? That very balance shaft delete bolt backed out and got in the rods way. Again, they both fall under the "Sh*t happens" category unfortunately.
