Question For Cammed Balts
Question For Cammed Balts
i have 272 cams, and 10:1 compression pistons, and a 2.85" pulley among other things. we finished the install on my cams, and i changed the plugs, the car pulled great right up to 8000 rpm's, but when i changed the plugs last night, now the car sputters really bad up above 7000.
If there is anyone with the same generic setup, i need some information on plugs, 1 or 2 stages colder, and what gap?????

If you don't get an answer form anyone, you may have to do the trial an error thing.
Get a set of each (1 step and 2 step colder plugs),
Start with one set; gap it, try it... pull the plugs, re-gap, re-try... and keep going with that set until you think you've found the sweet spot as far as the gap.
Try with the other set, and repeat the whole process.
Every car is different, so it's best to find it out for yourself.

yeah, i know this, but i was trying to find something close as a type of "quick-fix" because i have a lot of driving to do this weekend, and dont really have time for trial and error.
thanks though

raise pulley size for a definite fix.
sounds like spark blow out, either play with your dwell timeing(best fix) and/or check the gap on the new plugs Vs the old plug.
same EXACT plug as you used before? did you cut the electrode down to prevent dripping?

no, different plugs, the ones i had before were gapped different and were 2 stages colder, now are 1 stage colder.,
and that whole pulley size, nah, i aint gonna be changin it anytime soon, car pulls like a raped ape when it runs right

Just put the old plugs back in. Spark Plugs are good for a REALLY long time.
Otherwise, go to AutoZone and buy a Spark Plug gap checker, and then gap them to .35.
If problem continues, go to .32... at this point I would think you are having knock problems and I'd put the old plugs back in.

i'll try to help you here, fallow along.
you put different plugs in, hotter ones at that, and now you wonder why the car feels like dog ****?
your cylinder temps are going ape **** with the hotter plugs, get a set of two step colder plugs(like you had before) cut the electrode tips down a bit and re gap to 30-32
the reason i suggest pulley size change is simple, when you lower your boost number, your temps (in the cylinder) drop, thus eliminating your spark blow out issue.
as you said, you have some driving to do this weekend, if you cant find a set of your old plugs (2 step colder)then raising pulley size will eliminate this problem of yours so you can drive where ever you wish, safely.

mine are gapped to .035. also running near stock dwell timing.
i had a different issue with the car and the MAF, but ive since fixed that, and while i was trying to fix it, i put the 1 stage colder plugs in it, i guess i thought that may have been contributing, but i will put the 2 stage colder plugs back in, and i just checked the gap on the old plugs, and 2 were at .033, and 2 were at .040
