ZZP 3" Now AFR is Lean

Just installed the ZZP 3" and when I started it up after the install, the car almost died right off the bat. After I held its hand while it warmed up (constant throttle to keep revs steady at about 1500), I revved a couple times.

You could hear the intake letting air in, and a relatively long time delay before the revs increased (longer than before). The wideband said my afr was now idling at around 14.5 and on revs dropped to 10.3 and came right back up. But while driving, on shifts and sometimes while cruising, afr jumped to anywhere between 15 and 17.

Anybody got an explanation? Does the PCM need to relearn the conditions with the new intake?

I would assume with a 3" intake you need a retune pretty bad. Especially from stock.

so what is the problem?
none of the afrs you listed mean anything except the idling which is about spot on given that you probably don't see the fluctuation too well when it's trying to hit 14.7

Problem is its falling on its face immediately after shifts....almost like when the filter would get wet

the afr is off cause the maf is calculating air through the stock intake size but the intake has been increased the above that. Therefore a percentage of the incoming air is unaccounted for. When I put on my 3" intake after all my other mods on the Sgt 2 tune my afr was off by 1.00 ish.

Fyi...

The stock intake "size" at the MAF provision is 3".

There are a lot of other factors that could be causing this....

The inlet of the ZZP intake looks to be larger than 3" to accept that huge filter they provide. Also, they place the filter very close to the MAF sensor which may cause some turbulence over the sensor & throw off the readings.

When you change the placement of the MAF sensor (angle, distance from filter, etc.) this will also skew your readings.

JAdam8139, did you disconnect the battery before installing the intake??

nope forgot to disconnect battery before I started taking the old intake out...then just decided to continue without disconnecting...

If i disconnect it for long enough the reconnect it, won't the pcm relearn the new conditions?

It was suggested to me that I go with a K&N intake system. I put it on up at a hillclimb (7,000) car ran fine from the start and has been great. Sucks in huge amounts of air. I am thinking that it is more than just because it is getting more air.
No expert, but I don't think getting more air from a better CAI is causing the problem.

Slowbalt.

no one has nit on the fact he said it's sucking air, which would mean an air leak and the cause for all the studdering. Are all your clamps on tight, possibly take them off and push the rubber coupler farther up the intake pipe and use hair spray to seal the silicone coupler on the intake pipe.

+1 for vacuum leaks. check your clamps. If anything, the computer will make it run rich due to the additional air flow. the stock fuel tables typically run rich if it sees anything above stock airflow. That's why you get it tuned to make it leaner to get more power with the correct afr.

long story short, you should be running richer than before if there are no leaks.
