you removed the insulator from around the filter??? I would say bad idea.....the insulator keeps the hot air from the engine bay getting sucked into the filter

Cooler air is more dense. The more dense the air is, the more fuel is needed to keep a stoichiometric mixture/efficient burn. This increases the volumetric efficiency of the engine.

By inducing hot air, you're lowering the air density, the amount of fuel required to keep a stoichiometric mixture, and lowering the volumetric efficiency.

Keep it cool, man. Keep it cool.

for performance you want the coldest air you can get.

BUT there is an up side to hot air. because the hot air is less dense it takes less fuel to make the correct mixture. bad for power but good for fuel economy. its not going to be anything big, but it is something to keep in mind, if thats a concern of yours.

you prob lose 1-2HP at the crank, and will notice nothing while driving except 1-2MPG.

any numbers are really going to be subjective. air temperature is going to play a huge role in it. if outside air temp is around 100, you aren't going to see any difference at all. underhood temperatures are somewhere around 150. On a nice cool day, say the temperature is 20 outside, then yeah there will be some huge differences. the performance will be noticeable. you might not get the full 20* temperature to the intake, but if you can bump that 150 down to 50 or 60, thats a big difference. could be as much as 5-10% increase in power. But that will directly translate into lost mpg's.

on a normal 70* day i would guess you could lose or gain 5hp and lose or gain 1 mpg (thats a stretch).

do you like the louder sound? if you do then get rid of the box. Its not like you have a highly tuned performance machine anyways.

I would say take the air box and lower intake funnel out and find some plumbing to get the filter behind the headlight. That will get you what you want, more noise & cold air. You can get the plastic spectra stuff for that matter, a 90 at the maf to send it down, a 22 degree and maybe a 6" or 4" straight ought to do it. Its chromed so it will look ok, not all one piece like replacing it all would be, but not all the intake kits are 1 piece either. Got to pepboys advance or who ever sells it there and just get a couple pieces and work it out and return he rest.

If you want what you think that was going to do for you, do this instead.

Yes you can get the resonator out without taking the bumper off.

Its MUCH easier to do with a set of wheel ramps and getting the front end up.

Remove the splashguard inside the wheel well and the headlight and headlight bracket, then its very simple.

Be sure to put the splash guard Back on.

GM's Service Instructions:

Air Cleaner Inlet Duct Replacement
Removal Procedure

Remove the right front tire and wheel. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation .
Remove the right front fender liner. Refer to Front Fender Liner Replacement .
Remove the air cleaner intake duct retainer.
Remove the air cleaner intake duct bolt.
Remove the air cleaner intake duct.

Installation Procedure

Position the air cleaner intake duct.
Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Cautions and Notices.

Install the air cleaner intake duct bolt.
Tighten
Tighten the bolt to 10 Nˇm (89 lb ft).

Install the air cleaner intake duct retainer.
Install the right front fender liner. Refer to Front Fender Liner Replacement .
Install the right front tire and wheel. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation .

My cooler air inlet option - Its 3-1/2 Stainless Steel Truck Exhaust Stack Pipe, NOT dryer hose from Home Depot.
