Coolant Temp Sensor

So my car had a kind heart to tell me the engine was at "---*F" yesterday on my drive home. About 5 minutes into the drive, the CEL popped on. Ran completely fine, no strange noises, nothing out of the ordinary, other than no coolant temp reading.

Started it up this morning, still had no temp reading, still had a light. Two minutes into my drive, I look down and my coolant now miraculously has left "---" and returned to a normal temperature reading...

What the hell is causing this? CTS going bad? If so, where is this lovely sensor.

And no, I haven't gotten around to reading the code.

CTS is on the back side of the engine near the thermostat I believe just below it. Probably a faulty reading.

So it's been 3 months since the last post on this. Has anyone fixed the problem? I have the same thing going on now.

I have 50k on mine never had an issue. I have read about this many times before seems to be another common problem along with the end links going out on these cars. I wouldn't worry about it until it doesn't work at all completely. When it stops working its easy to replace and not that expensive. If you don't replace it you might have problems with the fans turning on and other emissions related things that operate by using the temp of the coolant.

It's been too flakey as of late for me to be comfortable with it - plus, when it goes out, the car has no clue what temp it is, and runs the fan, and lowers gas mileage.

What's the correct P/N for the sensor? I found two part numbers, and can't decipher which one is the right one...
