ION3 2.4 differences?

Hello all,

I have a few questions about my 2006 ION3, 5 speed. It's great on gas, I like the center mount gauges, and it's an all around nice car. Past cars include 2002 Z28, Vortech 5.0, 2002 Mustang GT, a bunch of DSM's, XR4Ti, RX7 Turbo II.... Basically I wanted a plain jane driver with cheap insurance and a low payment. I wasn't looking to get the 2.4 but it was the only one the dealer had with a stick.

Are there any differences between the ION3 2.4 and the Cobalt SS NA?

Are the gear ratios/final drive in the transaxle the same? I have the 'sport suspension' option, but I'm wondering if it's the same as what's underneath the Cobalt SS.

Are the engines tuned the same? I'm pretty sure the 2.4 ION doesn't require premium.

I've actually only had the car above 4,000 RPMs a few times, just to see what would happen I think the stock tires are useless, in the rain the car understeers BAD and you can hardly drive it without the traction control kicking on. Also was wondering what the car would run bone stock in the 1/4 mile.

Thanks!

rob you're going to find that aside from some of the suspension and the obvious differences in the body, it's essentially the same car with a different name

I figured there might be minor ECU calibration differences or at least a shorter final drive ratio on the Cobalt, just wanted to be sure. Thanks.

yeah, the 2.4SS seems to be set up a little sportier... stiffer ride, bigger wheels, more aggressive body treatments, but the nuts and bolts of it are the same.

if a duck farts does the water ripple? you bet

of course I am

I'm actually waiting on an electric valve for my dump to show up in the next few weeks from QTP and bumping my speed limiter up hopefully this weekend. I'm holding out on any large track events till late fall/early winter. she likes the cold air a ton more than this hot ass humid crap.

true, I should have said "colder" instead, what they call winter down here isn't true to the term

i was also under the impression that under the sheetmetal may be the same, but that the oil was a few hundred pouns heavier duw to the rear doors and extra bracing to make the poly body not flex as much. plus it had more glass.

i have NO factual basis for this, other than an "i thought" comments?

p.s. about the wang thing... i'm irish, i bought an SS.

Suspension is different, springs, shocks, anti-roll bars are not shared. The qaud coupe is abit heavier then the 2dr Cobalt but its probably under 75lbs difference.

Trans and 3.84 gears are the same.

actually the QC is about 2800lbs, the cobalt is at least 2900lbs for the coupe and over 3000lbs for the sedan

rear beam is the same on the 05+, front sway bar and rest of the suspension is not though

sorry but you are wrong on a few things. the Coblat 2.4 SS comes in at 2815lbs and the sedan is still under 2900lbs. It s big misconception that the sedan weighs that much--due to CHevy USA being a bunch of dumb-asses--and then every single website spreading the wrong data.

I have weighed mine at a scale. Check out gmcanada.com

US website is wrong--end of story--they can't even get gear ratios right

You are right about the weight of a Quad coupe though....(were talking non S/C for both)

Ions are lighter than Cobalts!

my Ion 2 sedan weighs in around 2750 according to the Saturn website, I believe the exact number was 2743. And even lighter for the old Ion 1's...

My G5 GT coupe clocks in at 2781lbs and my GF's 4 door base auto with A/C clocks in at 2785lbs. For comparison, my Grand Am SE 4 door weighed 3140lbs.

wow well that sucks. I know the Ion numbers are close if not right on from a weigh in a while back, but GM US is that far off is just dumb. I do believe it though.

so there's very little to no weight difference, that's pretty sweet actually

im not sure about technical diff's but one major thing i like about the quad coupe is the 2 suicide doors, i imagine it makes it alot easier to get in and out of the back which is a plus if you have alot of friends in the car all the time. thats what might sell me on the ion when it time to buy something.

I'll tell you this, it's the easiest way to transport a pair of kegs that I know of

when I used to cart people around a lot it was very handy, and is from time to time
