Will GM ever get back into the sport compact class?

What about the Regal GS? Wasn't that like 275 hp, 2.0L turbo? They are a little bigger, but better finish too which is what everyone complains about the Cobalts anyway . They also had Brembos on the front, a 6 speed, and monstrous 255 wide tires on all 4 corners. Slap a ZFR on it and I'm sure it'll have no issues keeping up with anything .

the new STI is absolutely hideous lol i hate the looks of it and everyting, if i were to get one the interior isnt bad but then id be driving an STI that looks like an Evo/Civic crossbreed. I just wish gm would make another sport compact because guys in my area are on there high horse with the ST's thinking they are so fast and stuff but yet they havent even came close to touching the records the Balt set.

This. On my potential list of future car for 2015-2016. AWD or bust. Interested to see the MPG with awd. And if the car will be able to hold more HP with keeping reliability.

The problem with 2014 AWD Regal is the 40+K sticker price, in which I'd go with an AWD ATS for about the same price and get a better car, well IMO.

I'm the new car manager at a local dealership here in WI for Buick/Chevy/GMC and Buick's lineup has changed quite a bit from its "old person luxury" alias.
The Regals are actualy pretty bad ass and completely justify their price tag. The AWD GS is complete bad ass, and even the Verano turbo isn't half bad. The interior is spectacular from a GM standpoint, and you could actually lease a GS for a pretty low monthly payment.
The GNX when it comes out I think will be a REALLY hot vehicle considering it will be a sedan, but the rear doors will come out to almost the halfway point of the rear wheel wells, so it's going to a little more compact than the current GS model.

The Insignia line (known from Opel) was hitting the dealerships in Germany at the end of 2008 and else ware in 2009 which makes it 5 - 6 years old and at the end of it's life cycle so I'm not sure I agree with you as far as a price for what you get standpoint. The sheet metal has been freshend-up for 2014 and so has the engine, but that still doesn't justify 40+K window sticker. You don't hear of the Buick Regal in Sport Sedan circles, at least not yet.
You have to think about what goes into the vehicle. The car gotta complete makeover in the interior as well. You get a 7 inch configurable gauge cluster that you can even change the theme on, an 8 inch touch screen with voice control, bluetooth, autonet, all-wheel drive, corvette-like drive modes in sport, GS mode, brembo brakes, and it is a BLAST to drive. As far as what you get in comparison to other cars on the market...it has more standard options than anything Lexus, BMW, Infiniti or Lincoln has...just my 2 cents

I remember talking to the Buick rep at the NY auto show last year. Regal GS with AWD is a real nice car but is it true you cannot get a manual transmission with the AWD?

GM won't unless there is a market for it. Take a look, other than the Focus ST (which can be optioned up to a whopping $30k), there is no market. Dodge hasn't even made an SRT-4 in like 5 years now. GM is more interested in making record breaking cars like the C7 Z06 and the Z/28. They will probably sell as many Z06s, if not more, in one year than they sold Cobalt SS/TCs in their best year... sadly.

Take the ATS....drop the cadi price tag/image/luxury
Throw a performance suspension in it, nothing too crazy but enough to keep the car competitive stock, lose some weight, brand it as chevy, and profit?

Call it the Chevrolet ss jr. Completley ditch the 3.6 option to keep it out of Cadillacs radar. But concentrate more on performance for Chevys market. Fe5 suspension (unlikely magnetic to keep it chevy price friendly) boom you have a fun car hopefully well under 40k. Keep the awd option. Ditch the Malibu from the lineup. Happy life.
Or they could just take the current cruze
Do what they did with the verano turbo
Save some money on sound proofing and interior finish (basically equal to the current cruze ltz.)
Throw the rs package on it with some added zing.
Fe5 level suspension, LSD , brembos nice 18" wheels and some bolstered seats.
Use the 7" display for all the performance stats the old RPD could produce.
Price it near the cruze diesel level.
Win?

that's what the verano and regal are for. they will probably have to put the 2.0t into the Camaro, its not an lnf anymore that motor cant pass smog now. and the Camaro wont look like a Camaro since its the next gen when they switch to the alpha chassis.
