Update:

Got the adapter plate (big thanks to Mr. Belvedere) and found a cooler that'll work for cheap. Now just need to order the lines and fittings and we'll be on our way. Installation is planned for January, with much appreciated help from ecaulk To be continued!

 

Subd for results. That plate looks sweet! Takes up much less room than my setup. Is the sealing surface o-ringed?

Thats what we're planning, it looked like NPT 1/2inch threads going into the cooler. Do you run or recommend running an oil pressure gauge with an oil cooler setup?

 

Good idea to run the gauge regardless of the setup

Ive always loved the idea of an external oil cooler. Something about having coolant that close to oil scares me if it ever goes bad.

 

a little late in the game but this is what I did, purchased a drill and tap set for 1/2 NPT and adapted the stock oil cooler for front mount

 

Are you running any sort of heat shield between the turbo and the coolant pipe on the rear of the engine? I know I saw on a ZZP kit for a 2.4L that the turbo heat from being so close to the coolant line was increasing coolant temps on the car. It wasn't a track car so just running the fans earlier was enough to control it but in your case with constant hard use it would be too much to just absorb. Just at thought.

 

Instead of using that plate, what are people's thoughs on using the new DDMworks adapter for oil coolers? Their adapter replaces the plastic top of the oil filter port-thingy with a machined piece with ports for fittings to be threaded in.

 

You mean the one that Sharkey linked above? I wonder if it would flow as well as the adapter plate that Mr B makes...

 

OMG no way, . I am at work so I couldn't view the ebay link, but I just pulled out my phone to look at it. That is the exact same thing DDMworks just came out with. I'm not sure they know this thing exists . The only difference might be that DDM's still allows the stock oil filter to be used instead of requiring a remote filter.

Why is that? Is there not enough oil pressure that high up in the block to push the oil through an additional oil cooler? To be honest, until reading this thread I had no idea we had an oil cooler stock. I feel like that was never really common knowledge .

 

where the factory oil cooler bolts to the block there is a metal sleeve you have to remove and then plug the block before that cap can be used

 

so would the DDM works adapter be usable if you were say using a gen3 2.4 block without a factory oil cooler ?
