How to remove rust spots and paint over?

Not on my cobalt, but my gf's car. She has a few fairly large spots were the paint chipped and rust is coming through. I have no idea how to get the rust off, and what to do afterwards. I know you have to paint prime then seal but wasnt sure how to do this. Anyone got any tips or sites that could point me in the right direction? Thank you!

Anyone?

Well, first step is to get rid of the rust. No sense in painting over rust.

Sawzall.

j/k

Is it just surface rust, or has it gone all the way through? If its gone through it will take someone with body experience to get it right, thats for sure.

Well, if you are asking the question, it must just be surface rust. lol Otherwise you would be able to see through it.

How big are the spots?

Here is one site I found: http://www.doityourself.com/stry/smallrustspotscar

Leave it alone and take it to a pro. I have seen too many people try to fix something themselves and end up making it worse. More times than not it costs more to undo what the person did and start over than it would have had they just come to the shop first. If you ahve ne experience in paint and body work, thentoday is not the day to start. It is a skill. Please take it to a reputable shop and have them do it properly.

I do, but if I tell you how to do it without you having any previous experience, you will make the situation much much worse.

There really not big spots, I thought they were bigger so I looked again only about the size of a quarter. Can it really be that hard?

It is not that it is hard, but if you do not know what you are doing then you will screw it up. Would you install a clutch in your car if you had no mechanical ability? NO. Then do not attempt to fix a cosmetic flaw without knowledge in paint and body work. It id for your own good.
