How do you guys go about painting your valve covers? Do you remove them completely? Any special paint or anything?

Ive always used engine enamel but i've seen people use normal paint and get away with it. Most spray paint boil at around 340 degrees which I doubt the valve cover gets that hot so I don't see why you can't use normal spray paint.

Is it a time consuming process to remove? Is it something I could do over a weekend? I love the look of the painted valve cover.

Gestapo007 and now 1LSJ2NV both have painted v/c's... but done with a basecoat clearcoat setup...

I know Gestapoooo has had his on there for several months without issues, my brakes are basecoat clearcoated and have held up just fine

Is there anything special to take note of? Anything connected to the cover that's difficult to remove? Any seals that need to be replaced or RTV that needs to be scraped and replaced? Thanks

You have to take the breather line off of the intake/Valve cover connection and also another one that goes from the valve cover to the turbo. The intake one is easy just disconnect where it attaches to the intake. The turbo one is much harder to figure out. There is a small bolt (9mm i think) right next to where the breather line goes into the turbo. If you remove that then the line will come off of the turbo no problem.

the seal is a flexible rubber type and it can be reused as long as you are under 100k miles or so (if you are over 100k miles you should replace it anyways).

Awesome, thanks for the advice. I'll tackle this once I decide on which paint to use

To vent crank case pressure. My dipstick kept popping out. There are better ways to do it but this worked for me. And i have yet to spray oil out of the breathers

I wetsanded it with sandpaper. 400 grit, then 800, then 1000, then 2000, then finished it up with some aluminum polish. All by hand. Not the best or most professional, but it sure does look better than stock.
