Opinion on tail lights.

So i'm looking into getting some tail lights but not sure which ones to get. The problem is I don't have much free cash and also, I don't really like any of the ones on the market. I was then thinking I could just smoke them, but I don't have much other black on my car so they would look out of place. After a few hours of toying around with different DIY options and this is what i came up with.

I was thinking of color matching the center of the housing to my car so it was filled in then leaving a ring of red then color matching the sides kind of like the AVS covers I've seen on some people's car. Any options? Legality stand points? Just plan dumb?

Indeed i have, none of those are what i'm planning for my car. They may have parts of it, or the same basic idea but different executions but not the same. Lemme see if i cant do some photoshop work to make this a little clearer.

Something like this... only not done in paint but in real life.

what you find is what you have to work with pretty much unless you custom mod your tails.

That is exactly what I was going for a custom job. I would like to custom paint or tint my lights to look more like the pictures I posted and less like stock. I just figured I would ask opinions about what i would be doing before i do it.

Painting your lights in that way will greatly reduce their effectiveness, as the most clear part of the lens will be blocked off, leaving only the part with the reflectors showing, which don't let nearly as much light through. You can still do it, but don't be surprised when you get pulled over because of the tails.

See this is the kind of info I was wondering about. If it's going to cause problems with the police i'd rather steer clear, but they are surprisingly bright even when something blocking the middle of the housing... though I've only attempted it with cardboard just to see what it'd look look.

I'm looking for a red ring tail light not a solid dot, so more like a skyline less like a cobalt (excuse the skyline it's the only car with the kind of tail lights i'm after) :P

I've seen those and they look awesome at night but I really hate how the look during the day which is why I was going to use paint that's color matched to my car to fill in the gaps.
