Painting the bowties

Ok I want to paint the rear and front bowties to match the color of my car.

Can I use the touch up paint I got in the mail? If not where can I find the spray paint for the color of my car?

What grit sandpaper would I need?

I used some krylon paint for plastics.....just got some light grit sandpaper (i think I had like 1000 grit or something) you just really need something to rough up the surface a bit. I taped off the shiny silver part and did two light coats....here's mine.

You don't need any sandpaper. What you need is red (heavy duty) scotch brite pad, masking tape, and some wax and grease remover.

Mask off the chrome and scuff the emblem with a red scotch brite pad then wipe down the emblem with some wax and grease remover. From there you paint the emblem.

Do not use touch up paint to do it. It is essentially nail polish. You can use the GM color matched spray paint, but it will not be near as glossy as the paint on your car. The dpray paint they sell is not anything close to what is used on the car. To truly make it match, you would have to take it to a body shop and have them paint it using the same basecoat-clear coat formula used on the car. I personally prefer the flat black look on the bowties.

I used Dupli-color victory red on my bowties -- front bowtie over a year ago and still shiney. As everyone's mentioned just scuff up the surface so the paint can adhere better and use automotive tape (Wal-Mart, Autozone) to tape off the chrome and car surfaces. The more time you spend on the tape covering the better the finished product will be -- use a single edge razor blade or exacto knife to help trim the tape on the chrome.

You don't have to use a spray can is what I am saying. If you are going flat black, then a spray can works great, but if you want ot color match then I say no.

Spraying it on is the only way to get a nice smooth surface. Even with spray you can end up with "orange peel" or imperfections. Just use a white rubbing compound to shine it up -- you can use the compound to fix brushed on paint too -- just make sure the paint is dry before using it. Follow with a good wax.

I think you may have me confused. I would never brush on automotive paint. You can't. It is too watery to get the desired results. What I am saying is that there is a difference in quality from spray can and from having it professionaly painted. The materials are not the same. The process is not the same. No good body shop uses a spray can to paint cars.

Damn, that looks nice.

Thanks for the info. I'll probably do it in a week or two so I'll post pics when it's finished.
