i would invest in some retrofits, looks better imo, i hate all the extra leds and crap, i just like one projector with a nice ccfl halo in stockers. the LED halos tend to be dim and burn out.
They all use different projectors and different quality parts. Output wise, order from worst to best goes
gen 2s
gen 1s
gen 3s
gen 4s
retrofits
All of the "gen" projectors have a halogen based projector, which, while they can run hids fine, they are not optically designed to run them, like you will get with a set of retrofitted projectors. Retrofitting projectors is taking an individual projector from another OEM vehicle, such as Mercedes E55 or Cadillac Escalade, and mounting them in the factory headlights. This will yield the best output possible, but will also be the most expensive route.

I have gen 4s with hids, cutoff is good but bleeds blue a little at the cutoff line. I'm in search of some retros just for the look. Theyre so much cleaner than any gen projector is.
i just luckily for a set of retros off a member on here for $80. im just waiting for them to get here he said they didnt come with a harness but he told me who made them, im hoping i can get them to work. but when i asked the maker if i could get a harness they asked me if it was gen 1 or 2. so thats why i was wondering.
Most of those projector headlights are meant for halogens only. You'll get the best results by retrofitting HID projectors into your stock housing. Yeah, it's more expensive, but SOOO worth it.
