Calgary - random talk thread
whom ever said that needs to really lay of the drugs;
as a general rule of thumb;
more displacement = more torque
this will hold true especially in an engine family, since the larger engine is typically engineered for heavier cars than that which the smaller displacement engines come as standard equipment in...
EG:
LE5
Standard: Chevrolet Malibu / Saturn Vue
Regular option: Chevrolet HHR
special option: Chevrolet Cobalt SS/Cobalt Sport & Pontiac Pursuit GT/G5 GT
Jon, you need to give someone's head a shake
Even people here have to have heard of the old red-neck rule:
There's no replacement for displacement.
Forced induction essentially makes an engine act as though it's a larger displacement engine.
lol I know right? well this LT said that he could beat a subie anyday of the week so........ where's Banzai when you need him! hahahaha
This LT said he was told this by a certain sunburnt lil birdie!
I seen this on a rhd supra a few months ago " Technology is the only substitute for displacement"

I see that quote on a car all the time over in tuscany
If this car was a strategically bought/built pre-2007 L61 'LT', then it could have all the GMPP 2.2L parts (ect) - which could put it well beyond stock LE5 power ratings...
ya i've seen said supra at race city as well. and soundjunky the only way a fully bolted LT will win against a 2.4 is if they have it tuned for the increase in air flow. stock tunes with bolt ons do nothing for these cars in regards to bigger HP increases.
it's a 2008 LT. and the owner is pretty tight with his wallet! hahahaha
Oh I forgot. this LT thinks a performance clutch and aluminum flywheel will net him 50 more Torque!

if I've understood correctly, he 2007+ L61 (has cam sensors?) & LAP (direct injected) have no real aftermarket support...
the flywheel will let him rev faster, but any time he pushes in the clutch it will also slow faster ~ the 'performance' clutch will do absolutely nothing for power...
I agree Steve that any OBD2 car needs a proper retune to make more power...
Those engines use different cams, and the ECM needs the extra cam lobe...
I mentioned the LAP only because it shares the 2.2L Ecotec designation with the L61 - but has even less aftermarket support than the '07-08 L61.
From what I've read, the only L61 that is worth trying to build is the 2006 & prior version.
I mean, you can only go so far with a CAI/header/exhaust/tune... to make significantly more power (like the 50hp you claimed he thought to have gained) you need to pop the engine apart, and start swapping stuff...

Maybe you have found someone new for me to mess with in my 180hp Grand Am?
(that's the actual factory rating btw)
Gotta fix the exhaust & replace one CV before I bring it to race city though;
I'd hate to have a CV grenade on me at the track!
I'm hoping with a different set of tires that recently I got, that I can get into the 14's at race City - on the same engine, and no other changes from my last run(s)...
Racing (legally) is soooo fun!

too funny!
You should ask him if he can share (what ever it is he's on)!!
Between us all here, my GA started being a drivers completion against the LSJ cars I was stacked up against in 2008 ~ a couple of which I would have taken if my 3-4 shifting didn't screw me seemingly every single time!
Dont get me wrong, they were faster cars than me, but if the driver didn't know how to run, and I didn't screw up, it would have been a sweet victory for me
When I raced Rene, I wasn't even being as regimented as I can be - but my first run (on good old street tires) was in the fifteens...
(Sorry, I will keep referring to him, because to date, he is the only local Cobalt guy I've run my car against...
Running against him would have been so much better if he didn't take it personally though...
I have since pretty much cleared up any shifting issues;
Become more regimented in my launching (ect);
then shaved another 2/10 of a second after I installed a header....
At a bare minimum I run on drag radials now...
My personal best from last year @ Race City (uncorrected; and it's really the only track I run at) is 15.25 @ 89mph
(I can have higher trap speeds, but it's at the cost of a lower ET because I can just sit at the tree spinning - even with the DR's)
My funnest kill is a tie between either:
1) The 09(?) Rabbit (Golf 2 door) GTI
2) A local punk (nice enough guy, but you'd have to see him to know why I call him a punk) in his 2.0L Turbo Audi ~ after which he said some cop-out like;
Man, I should have turned my boost up for that run

hahaha that thing sounds like it's got a misfire or something along that lnes. either way it seems like it will go! I've never been to race city and I want to go but after I get my dual pass and a tune from pickles. Those little quad 4's are fast and everyone has to blame the car for something when they are racing! lol

The VW left after our run though...

And for the record, I've been beaten by other cars alot more than I have beaten other cars...
So I try to find cars that I at least have a chance to win against to run...
I still consider the most fair competition for the GA being other FWD/4cylinder n/a vehicles - but very few run at Race City.
A misfire huh?
well what about this one - it sure makes a racket!

The GA sounds good. it sounds like a small V8 with a lumpy cam. the balt sounded like rice crispies were having milk poured on them! minus the crackle! lol it still sounded pretty decent

Thank you very much!
It seems to me the Cobalt just had a better sized exhaust;
My GA's is too big (read: noisy) - hopefully though I'll have that fixed this year too;
I might put off buying the MPx exhaust I want for the Cobalt, just so that I can get the GA's exhaust done...
