I am going to email them also... however, i was thinking about getting a used tranny and getting it cryo'd

Get a thread together for Shep trans, so they can see all those that would be interested. I would be willing to shell out 2-3 grand for a well built tranny, no questions asked. Then I could continue on moddin my Cobalt without fear of the last link in my drivetrain failing for a third time!

Another option we have at our disposal is Performance Autowerks. They build SRT-4 transmissions since they have issues as just like us. They are familiar with our powertrain too as they were the ones that did the LS2 swap in to the Pontiac Solstice awhile back. They also support the Soltice in other ways as well. I contacted them back when I was breaking my tranny's and this is what they had to say. I would have sent in the tranny with a broken third gear, but I just never had the funds or time to do it.

Billy,
We would strengthen the geasrset by using new from Chevrolet parts thencryo treating them and finally using a process called WPC which isbasically microscopic shot peening which strengthens the surface of themetal. As far as shipping goes I would recommend DHL, they seem to be the most reasonable. Crate it up and give them a call. I am sure we can do something so don't worry about a charge for no upgrades.

Regards,
Dave Gilbert Performance Autowerks, Inc.12425 Rhea Dr. Suite CPlainfield, IL 60544Phone - 815-439-4547Fax - 815-439-6751

That sounds like a positive note to me. Just have a couple questionsfirst. How would you go about strengthening the gearset? What I mean is what are your processes, and what happens if the gears cannot be cryotreated or what have you? I have no idea about the inside of the tranny because that is the one area I refuse to touch on the car. Do you have a preferred shipper, and if I do indeed send it in and nothing can be done to it, what will that cost me since obviously there would be diassembly time etc? Thank you.

I am sure we could do it but we would need your trans to quote a price. Send that one in!

Sincerely,
Dave Gilbert Performance Autowerks, Inc

I recently read that you guys beef up SRT-4 transmissions, and was wondering if you would beef up my Cobalt's transmission. I just broke my second transmission and am getting tired of my third gear taking a dump. If it's possible to replace what's broken and build it stronger, please let me know.

Thank you.
Billy
Here are the Staged kits they offer for the SRT-4 tranny's that are absolutely loved by the guys on their forum. I have heard nothing but great reviews as well.

Back from the dead. My F35 went out this weekend. I haven't pulled it yet but i can see a hole in the diff housing and a cracked gearbox case. The gearbox is cocked at an angle to the bellhousing. The car wont even start right now because the thing is so badly bound up. I'm worried there might be more problems. This came out of nowhere for me. The car has almost 47,000 on the clock.

That sounds like a shift fork... or a shifter problem. Check your arms and cables.

I'd like to see how many trannies get nuked with the turbo swaps. What do you think would subject more strain on a transmission? All the torque and power brought on instantly by a blower or a gradual sloping power curve brought on by a turbo.

The 2nd Gear Synchro isn't power related. I personally think that one is from hard downshifting... and crappy parts.

The people who are experiencing third gear shred... that is probably from the instant torque of the S/C. But a BIG turbo can produce the same results.

The stock trans on the TC are stiffer and different.

I never got any at the track, spinning to the 60' line

I put my solid upper mount, and that hooker doesn't even try to move

Bleh, you can do the same thing with a tune.

Throttle body 'upgrades' are a waste of money.

Seriously, have fun trying to drive around town.

i've heard it from both sides, and yes a tune can do that, but having a bigger TB can't hurt anything. just move more air.

My bellhousing cracked and she makes a hell of a lot of noise when spinning in any gear, so it's pretty owned.
