Recently when pulling away from a stop, even really slowly I am getting a bumping noise. It is repetative like bump, bump,bump, bump, then once i am moving it stops and doesn't happen again at all during regular driving. Only once in a while also not everytime I start off.


Any Ideas? sounds like it may be something that is rotating since it happens repeatedly, but wouldn't it get faster with each gear, not stop once I get moving?

Turn the wheel all the way to one side and drive around, then try the other direction in FWD and REV

 

Jack up the front end and inspect the joints. Leave in gear and give both wheels a crank and see if you hear or feel a broken joint. Also look for a ripped boot.

On different cars yea. Just quit accelerating so damn hard with your wheels turned. lol

Or gravel to pavement spinning can cause failure as well.

 

it only happens when i start slowly.. if I launch i hear no noise?

 

yea but thats what might have caused the CV failure in the first place. More times than not anyways.

never had them off. I'll check that ASAP

 

Jack up and try tilting each of your wheels (side to side, up and down). If your wheels tilt greatly (or even at all in the up-down direction), you've got joint problems. If you don't see anything wrong, turn the steering wheel all the way and try and turn your wheels with your hand while inspecting the boots and you may find some problems.

Actually the halfshafts are independant of the hub so nothing will tilt. Unless you are talking about ball joints, then yes.

You're right... I've been driving a 1992 blazer around for a while and that's had ball joint and cv boot problems so that was an instinctual reply. By the way, DON'T drive around to check for problems; that's quite possibly the dumbest thing you can do.

one dude a couple months ago snapped an axle driving up a hill, but that's the only broken one i think anyone has seen

 

I wouldn't necessarily call broken axles, CV joints, or any suspensions related parts a problematic area of any single type of vehicle. Most of those failures are human error related.

 

I've got a suspension problem now too, not sure if it's the CV boot or if it's the right front shock. Something blew and there's grease EVERYfreakinWHERE inside the wheel well. Thank god I have 4 days off for it to sit at the shop.

That was my thinking too, hopefully they'll fix it with no problems, I've never done anything to the car that would cause the CV boot to crack.

 

I had the right drive axle "holder" break and it disconnected from everything and it started out as a slight rough driving almost as if the tire was flat it would bump at slow speeds.
