How do you guys shift from 1-2 when driving hard?

I'm trying to get to the bottom of this once and for all. I've heard everything from driving like a normal car (as clutch comes up, gas goes down) to dumping the clutch before touching the gas and everything in between. What I find best when driving hard (redlining 1st and going to 2nd) is when going from 1-2, only give it about half throttle and then nail it once the tires gain traction. If you floor it as you're letting the clutch up, you CAN get clutch slip, even if your tires have traction at the top of 1st. I've experienced it. I tried this technique out last night (the 1/2 throttle technique), and each and every time I did this I SPUN through almost all of 2nd gear. That's the way I do it at least. What do you guys do?

If you have traction issues, or a bad clutch, there is a much better way.

Rev 1st to red line. Clutch in. Shift to second. Wait for RPM's to drop to where they should be. Clutch out. Gas to the floor.

You have to feel the car. I almost always let the clutch out with the throttle off for normal driving. I end up around 3k shift (no throttle) for 25-40mph road, 4k shift 45-65 (1/4 to no throttle), redline (1/2 throttle). You don't need redline unless you plan on getting over 90mph fast. It comes up real fast, so I have no idea why anyone would shift at redline for a normal road.

If you don't have traction in first you definately don't want more throttle going into second. If you have traction in first, it is all about a clean shift. If you shift too slow you will spin. If you give it more throttle than needed you will spin. Drive more on the snow and steep hills, it is the same principle as far as I'm concerned. It will give you a better feel for managing power and traction.

AGREED!!

You have to practice. Learn the feel of your car, know what the surface is like that your driving on, milk the throttle if you have to, just dont EVER shift when while your spinnin, ive seen peolpe do it, wait till you have positive traction, or youll end up in the weakest part of the powerband and then youre fucked

Chirping the tires into second is just as bad as slipping the clutch. Killing valuable time.

Too much waiting in between gears with that technique. I do that when shifting below 3k however (rev match up and down shifts). I have 9500k on my stock clutch and zero slippage issues.

for normal driving, i rev match. (the method articzap described)

at the track...its no lift shifts.
40,000 kms, and no slip.

why? because my right foot has more settings then OFF and ON during 1st gear.

Agreed. You must baby 1st, otherwise you'll spin/hop and then mass clutchslip when you go to grab 2nd gear. I'm glad I read your how-to before I bought the car otherwise my clutch would probably be toast by now.

I push in the clutch, let off the gas, insert shifter into the number 2 slot, let off clutch back on gas!

I thought we learned that when we started driving manual cars didnt' we?

take first all the way out...clutch in and pull into neutral then clutch in half way put into gear and rev slightly the drop the clutch...also known as double clutching and rev matching...or u can speed shift where u dont take ur foot of the pedal (not recommended on stock clutch)

I rev match with every day driving.....

When shifting from 1st to 2nd quickly though, I put in the clutch, move shifter to second, move clutch out fast but not CRAZY fast and using no gas, when the shift completes I then gradually press on the gas and by around 5500 rpm in 2nd I should be wot...(my car spins second just by hitting the gas which I have recorded on video so I have to be easy)

lol.

I think I might get the Ingalls Stiffy. I plan on racing at the track this spring for one and 2nd i've heard nothing but positive reviews from it. The engine on this car moves so much it pisses me off a lot sometimes. I just wish it would stay still sometimes lol.
